Mumbai Airport Runways to Temporarily Close on May 8 for Seasonal Safety Works

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will halt operations on both runways for six hours on May 8 to conduct essential pre-monsoon maintenance. The temporary shutdown will occur between 11 am and 5 pm, forming a crucial part of the airport’s annual safety preparedness programme.

Despite the closure, authorities have assured that flight operations and passenger services will run without disruption. Airlines have already been given ample time to reschedule or adjust their flight slots thanks to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued six months in advance. CSMIA stated that this proactive step would prevent any operational setbacks.

CSMIA Gears Up for Monsoon at Busy 1,033-Acre Hub

Covering an area of 1,033 acres, CSMIA manages hundreds of daily flights, serving as a vital air transit hub for millions of travellers. Given the complexities that arise during the monsoon, the airport conducts routine infrastructure upgrades to ensure continued operational efficiency and traveler safety.

The upcoming maintenance will involve in-depth surface inspections, minor structural repairs, and drainage enhancements aimed at preventing waterlogging. High-tech monitoring systems will be used to track the progress and quality of the work, ensuring it is completed precisely within the scheduled window.

CSMIA, Airlines, ATC Align for Smooth Monsoon Maintenance

Airport officials have coordinated the maintenance with air traffic control, airlines, and ground operations teams. The collaborative effort aims to maintain uninterrupted services while executing critical seasonal upgrades.

According to Indian Express report, “CSMIA remains committed to delivering safe and seamless travel experiences throughout the year. This maintenance initiative is aligned with our ongoing strategy to meet global aviation safety benchmarks,” said an airport spokesperson.
