US President Donald Trump has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are the two world leaders he respects the most. Speaking about global leadership, Trump praised both leaders for their influence, political strength, and ability to lead some of the world’s largest populations.

He noted that Modi and Xi have demonstrated effectiveness in governance and have played key roles in shaping the policies and global standing of their respective nations. Trump’s remarks come at a time when India and China remain central to major geopolitical and economic developments, making their leadership increasingly significant on the world stage.

During the conversation, Trump remarked on Modi’s ability to maintain peace in a country with a population of 1.5 billion. He emphasised Modi’s stature, noting that India has made significant progress under his leadership. Trump stated, “Modi is very good… He stays out of wars, which is smart. He’s actually the biggest.” This comment reflects Trump’s view of Modi as a strong and capable leader on the global stage.

Trade Relations Between the US and India

Trump discussed the evolving business relationship between the United States and India, indicating that the two countries now engage in what he termed “fair business.” He remarked on the past trade dynamics, where he asserted that India “used to really rip us off.” Trump explained that this situation was a result of previous US political decisions that allowed such an imbalance to occur. However, he emphasised a shift in trade terms, suggesting that the relationship has improved significantly.

While acknowledging the current positive business engagements, Trump noted that Modi might not be entirely satisfied with the changes in trade dynamics, as it implies less advantageous terms for India compared to the past. Trump stated, “They’re not that happy about it because they used to do a lot better.” This observation indicates an ongoing tension in trade negotiations and expectations between the two nations.

The US President highlighted that while the economic collaboration has seen improvements, it is essential to continue fostering mutual benefits for both countries. This stance reinforces the significance of bilateral negotiations moving forward.

Trump’s Views on Modi’s Leadership Style

In addition to his comments on trade, Trump elaborated on his perception of Modi’s leadership style. He acknowledged the consistency of Modi’s tenure, noting that previous leaders in India often held office for much shorter periods. “Somebody would be there for six months and then a year. And then all of a sudden, Prime Minister Modi ended up, he’s been there for more than 12 years, very solid,” Trump remarked. This long-standing stability has apparently impressed Trump, reinforcing his view of Modi as a formidable leader.

Trump also characterised Modi as a person of “great calmness,” despite recognising his tough disposition, stating, “He’s a very tough guy.” This duality in Modi’s character is something that Trump finds noteworthy, reflecting the challenges faced by leaders in balancing firmness with composed leadership.

Moreover, Trump drew parallels between Modi and Xi Jinping, suggesting that both leaders possess a significant presence that would be hard to replicate in cinematic portrayals. In this respect, he pointed out that they exude confidence and stature that would be challenging to encapsulate in a film, thus further emphasising their distinct leadership qualities.
