The most recognized path to this esteemed role is through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination. Appointments under this scheme typically involve roles such as Deputy Secretary, Director, or Joint Secretary. Candidates applying for these positions are generally required to have a minimum of 15 years of professional experience in various sectors, including finance, agriculture, infrastructure, public policy, economics, and environmental management. The Lateral Entry Scheme aims to integrate specialized knowledge and expertise from the private sector into governmental decision-making processes. Although individuals appointed through this route may not officially become career IAS officers, they do carry out significant policymaking functions within various ministries and departments.
