‘Legitimate Duty and Right’: Iran’s President Pledges Retaliation Following Khamenei’s Killing

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has publicly vowed to seek retribution following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in recent US-Israeli strikes. In remarks to state television, he described avenging Khamenei’s death as a “legitimate duty and right” of the Islamic Republic. Pezeshkian characterized the killing of Khamenei, aged 86, as a significant threat to Muslims globally, stating that it represents an “open declaration of war against Muslims, particularly Shiites.” He emphasized Khamenei’s stature as the highest political authority in Iran and a prominent Shiite leader.

Military Action and Responses

The Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death early on a Sunday morning. This event was announced by US President Donald Trump, who characterized the strikes as a major opportunity for Iranians to reclaim their nation. The military offensive involved what Trump referred to as “heavy and pinpoint bombing” focused on Iranian military and government installations. This incident marks the second US attack on Iran within eight months amid ongoing discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.

Concerns Over Leadership Vacuum

Khamenei’s demise leaves a significant leadership gap, as there is no officially recognized successor. His absence raises concerns of potential instability in the region. Authorities within Iran have expressed that this incident will lead to heightened tensions, especially concerning their military operations against US and Israeli forces. The paramilitary group Revolutionary Guard stated that it plans to launch its most intense offensive against US and Israeli positions in response to the incident.

Widespread Unrest Following the Assassination

Reactions to Khamenei’s killing have sparked unrest in various parts of the Middle East. In Pakistan’s Karachi, protests escalated, resulting in at least six fatalities as demonstrators targeted the US Consulate. In Kashmir, tens of thousands took to the streets, vocally opposing the actions of both the US and Israel. The international organizations Hamas and Islamic Jihad issued statements condemning the assassination, labeling it a “heinous” attack and a “war crime,” respectively.

Internet Blackout in Iran

In the wake of these developments, Iran has experienced severe disruptions to internet access, with connectivity reportedly falling to just one percent of normal levels. This internet blackout marks the second consecutive day of restricted access as the nation grapples with the implications of Khamenei’s assassination. Amid ongoing missile exchanges and increasing threats, Pezeshkian’s declaration highlights Tehran’s perception of the assassination as a pivotal event that may alter the dynamics of conflict throughout the region.
