In Bihar, schoolchildren have been seen crossing the flood-affected Muhane River using an improvised iron pontoon attached to a rope. A video that has gained traction on social media depicts the children navigating the perilous crossing without adult supervision.

The students hail from the Ekdanga panchayat in Barh district and attend a government primary school situated on the opposite bank of the swollen river. The rising water levels, attributed to flooding from the Ganga River, have made traditional routes to the school inaccessible.

Villagers have fashioned a temporary solution by securing a large iron float to a makeshift bridge, allowing the children to cross the river. The absence of adult guidance during this crossing has raised alarms among local residents and educators alike.

Educational Authorities Acknowledge Risks

Adarsh Aniket, who is responsible for overseeing the school, acknowledged the dangers the children face when using the makeshift crossing. He has attempted to address these risks by encouraging parents to accompany their children each day. However, many parents are occupied with their work as labourers, making supervision challenging.

Barh Block Education Officer Amit Kumar confirmed that there is an alternative road route to the school, albeit it is approximately two kilometres in length. Kumar stated that parents have been advised to utilise this safer route instead of the hazardous crossing. He underscored the urgency of ensuring the safety of the children attending school in light of the current conditions.

Despite these recommendations, reports indicate that several families continue to rely on the makeshift float to facilitate their children’s education. The viral footage has prompted a wider discussion about the access and safety of schoolchildren in flood-affected regions, especially in the absence of adequate infrastructure.
