On September 28, 2026, Congress Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh raised concerns regarding the government’s handling of inflation as official reports showed India’s retail inflation rising to 4.82 per cent for August. This marked an increase from the 4.45 per cent observed in July. Food inflation was recorded at 5.95 per cent for August, up from 5.52 per cent in the previous month.

Ramesh’s statements came in light of a pressing need for the government to address the economic challenges faced by the population. He noted that the effects of inflation are now more evident beyond just household essentials, affecting a range of goods. According to Ramesh, the continuous rise in prices indicates a worrying trend for consumers, especially during the upcoming festival season.

In his remarks, Ramesh specifically highlighted the soaring prices of essential items, stating that onion prices had skyrocketed by 48.27 per cent compared to July. Other staples such as garlic and ginger also exhibited significant price increases, with garlic inflation standing at 43.60 per cent and ginger rising by 73.82 per cent in the same month.

Public Concern Over Government Inaction

Ramesh expressed frustration towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public communications, questioning when inflation and the accompanying public fears would be addressed. He pointed out that while Modi utilises his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ radio platform to discuss various topics, the pressing issue of inflation appears to be overlooked.

“When will he care about the public’s worries?” Ramesh asked rhetorically, highlighting the struggles that families face in managing their budgets amid rising expenses. He asserted that there seems to be a disconnect between the government’s awareness of the economic hardships affecting the middle class and the lower-income groups of society.

Ramesh’s comments reflect wider public sentiment, as many households grapple with rising living costs without apparent support from the government. He lamented that mounting household expenses and debts leave families in a challenging financial position during this economically fragile period.

Detailed Inflation Data and Trends

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released which includes details on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August revealed that the cumulative inflation rate for food and beverages was 5.66 per cent. Transport inflation was recorded at 4.60 per cent, while the education services category presented an inflation rate of 3.73 per cent. Notably, restaurant and accommodation services experienced inflation of 8.38 per cent.

It is vital to note that the CPI data was gathered from price information across 1,407 urban markets and 1,465 villages nationwide. MoSPI confirmed a 100 per cent response rate from both urban and rural sectors for August, indicating comprehensive data collection efforts.

The fluctuations in food prices, especially for commonly used vegetables, reveal troubling economic indicators. While prices for onions have surged drastically, tomatoes and potatoes have exhibited declines year on year, with tomatoes down by 31.09 per cent and potatoes falling by 13.14 per cent.

The next set of CPI data, representing economic trends for September 2026, is set to be released on October 12 by MoSPI. This upcoming release will provide further insights into the evolving inflation landscape in India.
