Jaguar Launches Type 01 Electric Grand Tourer With 1,030bhp and 644km Range

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jaguar has introduced the Type 01, marking its first production model under a new design philosophy. This all-electric four-door grand touring vehicle is built on the bespoke Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) and was unveiled in New York City. The Type 01 is powered by an impressive 1,030PS powertrain, boasting an expected range of up to 400 miles, or 644 kilometres, according to EPA estimates.

Exterior Design Features

The design of the Type 01 draws significantly from the earlier Type 00 concept, showcasing a striking aesthetic. Key features include a long bonnet, a sleek roofline, and a wide stance, harmonised with Jaguar’s new ‘strikethrough’ graphic. The front incorporates distinctive four-line LED daytime running lights, complemented by slim headlights. The vehicle is engineered for optimal aerodynamics, achieving a claimed drag coefficient of 0.23, making it the most aerodynamic model in Jaguar’s history.

Additional exterior characteristics include 23-inch wheels, flush door handles, and a substantial 3.2-metre wheelbase. Innovatively, the rear does not feature a traditional windscreen; instead, a camera-based digital rear-view system is employed, along with an electronically deployable rear spoiler as part of the aerodynamic enhancements. Some unconventional aspects, such as the unique body surfacing around the rear fenders, have been retained from the Type 00 concept.

Interior Design and Amenities

The cabin design embraces minimalism, highlighted by a prominent central spine that separates the front and rear interiors. The vehicle features a large 24-inch display that integrates the instrument cluster and infotainment capabilities. Premium materials, including brass finishes, are used throughout, while the front seats provide heating, ventilation, and massage options for added comfort.

Additionally, the Type 01 is equipped with a digital rear-view mirror, with climate controls and other features accessible through a central touchscreen interface. However, the design’s aesthetic choices lead to a few compromises, including a restricted sense of space in the rear due to the low roof and small side windows. Entry and exit from the vehicle may prove challenging, as passengers must navigate the high-sided body design.

In terms of performance, the Type 01 utilises a three-motor electric powertrain. This system features two motors powering the rear wheels and one motor for the front axle, generating 1,030PS and 1,365Nm of torque. The acceleration from 0 to 100km/h is claimed to take only 3.2 seconds. Multiple drive modes and torque vectoring enhance driving dynamics, while air suspension and twin-valve active dampers contribute to a superior ride experience.

Production Timeline and Indian Market Prospects

Production of the Jaguar Type 01 is expected to commence in 2027 at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull facility in the UK. The electric drive units and battery packs will be manufactured at the Wolverhampton plant, while the pressed body panels will originate from Halewood, Merseyside. Jaguar Land Rover has announced that customers will be able to place orders for the vehicle in early 2027.

Although further details regarding its launch in India remain undisclosed, the company has not yet provided a specific timeline or pricing information for the Type 01 in the Indian market. As Jaguar prepares for the introduction of this electric grand tourer, industry analysts are keenly awaiting its potential reception among Indian consumers.
