Israel Orders Evacuation of Southern Beirut Amid Escalating Violence

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Israeli government has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the entire Dahiyeh area in southern Beirut, impacting hundreds of thousands of residents. This directive came from the Israeli military and was announced shortly after Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich issued a stark warning, suggesting that the suburbs would resemble Khan Younis, a city in Gaza severely affected by ongoing conflicts. The urgency of the evacuation has led many families to scramble, attempting to gather their belongings in a chaotic situation.

Impact on Residents Amid Ongoing Conflict

Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee identified several neighborhoods, including Burj al-Barajneh, al-Hadath, Haret Hreik, and Shiyah, as areas from which residents must evacuate. According to reports from Beirut, the evacuation order represents an unprecedented action by the Israeli military, affecting an estimated 400,000 individuals living in these regions. Observers have noted a significant traffic jam as residents try to flee, raising concerns about how quickly people can evacuate given the current conditions.

Escalation of Violence and Military Operations

This evacuation comes on the heels of intensified cross-border violence, following Hezbollah’s rocketing of Israeli territories in response to escalating tensions after an incident involving Iran’s Supreme Leader. In retaliation, the Israeli military has engaged in extensive aerial bombardments across southern Lebanon, targeting various locations as part of ongoing military campaigns against Hezbollah. The group has intensified its retaliatory measures, launching rockets and drones at Israeli military positions.

Humanitarian Crisis and Displacement in Lebanon

The wave of Israeli attacks has resulted in significant civilian casualties, with the Lebanese Health Ministry reporting over 100 deaths and numerous injuries across the country. The humanitarian situation is rapidly deteriorating, with tens of thousands displaced within Lebanon. Many families are fleeing from southern regions to already overcrowded shelters in Beirut. Humanitarian organizations have voiced deep concerns over the impact of the ongoing conflict on the civilian population, which is already experiencing immense strain from the hostilities that began in October 2023.

Suspension of Flights and Humanitarian Concerns

Amid this escalating situation, operations at Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport were suspended following Israeli threats of further assaults on the capital. Human Rights Watch has expressed alarm regarding the forced evacuation orders for residents south of the Litani River. They highlighted legal and humanitarian implications of these measures, particularly for vulnerable populations including the elderly and those with disabilities, questioning their ability to evacuate swiftly and safely under the current circumstances.
