Israeli forces launched airstrikes across Gaza on Saturday, resulting in six fatalities, local officials confirmed. Four people died in an air raid on a residential property in Gaza City, while two others lost their lives in Khan Younis, located in southern Gaza. The attacks occurred shortly after US President Donald Trump urged Israel to stop bombing Gaza, stating Hamas was prepared to accept a peace deal that included releasing hostages.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced preparations to swiftly initiate the first stage of President Trump’s peace proposal following Hamas’ response. Reports from Israeli media indicated the government had ordered a reduction in offensive military actions in Gaza. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces’ chief of staff mentioned that troops are gearing up to implement the peace plan but did not confirm a decrease in combat operations.
Hamas, which governs Gaza, responded to the 20-point plan proposed by President Trump, who had given the group a deadline of Sunday to accept the offer or face severe consequences.
Trump Urges Gaza Bombing Halt for Hostages
Positioning himself as a crucial mediator, Trump expressed confidence on Friday that Hamas was “ready for a lasting PEACE.” He urged the Israeli government to immediately halt the bombardment to enable the safe and swift release of hostages. Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: “Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly! We are already in discussions on details to be worked out. This is not about Gaza alone, this is about long sought PEACE in the Middle East.”
In response, Netanyahu’s office reiterated Israel’s intent to cooperate fully with the US administration to end the conflict in line with Israel’s principles and Trump’s vision.
Within Israel, Netanyahu faces pressure from two opposing groups families of hostages and the war-weary public demand urgent negotiations, while members of his far-right coalition insist on continuing military operations without pause.
Israel’s Offensive Launched After Deadly Hamas Attack
The ongoing Israeli offensive was launched after Hamas militants attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing approximately 1,200 people and abducting 251 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. Of the captives, about 48 remain in Gaza, with 20 reportedly alive.
According to Gaza health officials, the Israeli campaign has caused over 66,000 deaths, predominantly among civilians, and left much of the territory in ruins. Severe restrictions on aid deliveries have created famine-like conditions, worsening an already grave humanitarian crisis.
On the international stage, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed President Trump’s mediation efforts, stating on X: “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward.”
