Delhi’s Air Quality Index Reaches 187, Raising Concerns Over Winter Pollution Crisis and Public Health Impacts

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent rise in Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) to 187 on October 4 has raised alarms regarding the impending winter pollution crisis. This marks the highest four-day average since 2020, signalling a potentially hazardous season ahead. Experts warn that the city may face severe air quality issues, exacerbated by ineffective and poorly timed measures implemented over the years to combat winter pollution.

Health professionals are particularly concerned about the cumulative effects of pollution, which can lead to increased respiratory emergencies. Doctors emphasised that factors such as lower temperatures, stagnant winds, vehicle emissions, construction dust, and crop burning from neighbouring states contribute to worsening air quality.

Doctors noted that consistent exposure to high pollution levels is detrimental to public health, stating that individuals are experiencing increasingly severe health issues as a result of prolonged exposure. This trend raises fears about the long-term impact of pollution on respiratory health and overall well-being.

Health Implications of Rising Pollution Levels

Research conducted in Delhi has revealed alarming statistics regarding respiratory illnesses. A study spanning four hospitals from March 2018 to February 2019 found that 41.2 per cent of patients with acute respiratory symptoms were admitted during winter, compared to 27.9 per cent in summer. Furthermore, emergency visits for children experiencing acute respiratory symptoms were 29 per cent higher on days with elevated pollution levels.

Residents are already feeling the effects of the deteriorating air quality. A former Delhi resident, recounted her struggles with asthma, which forced her to leave the city after only ten months. She described how her condition worsened during high pollution months, leading her to seek cleaner environments. Many families face similar challenges, often relocating elderly relatives to areas with better air quality to protect their health.

Doctors highlighted the concerning trend of increasing asthma cases among children, noting that even those as young as eight or nine are now being diagnosed. He linked air pollution to various respiratory conditions, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and indicated a rise in lung cancer cases, although further research is required to establish a direct correlation.

Challenges and Recommendations for Managing Air Quality

Despite the availability of health advisories during high pollution months, compliance remains low. Many individuals struggle with respiratory issues and express scepticism about the effectiveness of government recommendations. Someone who carries an asthma inhaler, highlighted the challenges posed by festive seasons and the need for better environmental management practices.

Doctors proposed several measures to mitigate exposure to pollution during high-AQI days. Experts advise individuals to monitor AQI levels and adjust their schedules accordingly, emphasising the importance of staying indoors on heavily polluted days. Doctors also recommend that those with pre-existing respiratory conditions adhere to prescribed treatments and consult healthcare professionals regularly.

Additionally, Doctors suggests using air purifiers effectively and wearing well-fitting N95 masks outdoors to reduce exposure to harmful particles. Experts underscores the need for proactive measures to protect vulnerable populations, particularly during peak pollution periods.

As Delhi braces for another challenging winter, the early spike in AQI serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against air pollution. While personal precautions can help mitigate exposure, comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of pollution remain essential for improving air quality and public health in the capital.
