Who Was India’s First Woman CM ?

She was a freedom fighter, a Gandhian, and India’s first woman Chief Minister. The CSR Journal’s Her Story will discuss the life and works of Sucheta Kriplani, a name that deserves to be remembered. 

Born in 1908 in Ambala, Sucheta Kriplani studied at Indraprastha College and later became a professor. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, she plunged into the freedom struggle during the Quit India Movement of 1942. 

Kriplani played a crucial role in drafting the Indian Constitution as a member of the Constituent Assembly, where her speeches highlighted equality, justice, and women’s rights. 

In 1963, Sucheta Kriplani created history by becoming India’s first woman Chief Minister, serving Uttar Pradesh. Her tenure was marked by administrative reforms and a strong, principled style of governance. 

Beyond politics, she stood as a symbol of courage and dignity. Sucheta Kriplani passed away in 1974, but her legacy continues to inspire women in leadership and India’s democratic journey.
