Indian Tourist Abhinav Lamba Dies While Scuba Diving in Florida Keys

The CSR Journal Magazine

An Indian tourist, identified as 45-year-old Abhinav Lamba, tragically passed away after a scuba diving incident in the Florida Keys earlier this month. Lamba was diving at Molasses Reef at around 11 am on March 18 when he reportedly showed signs of distress and subsequently went underwater, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The divers aboard a commercial dive boat noticed his situation and located him at a depth of approximately 25 feet.

Rescue Attempts and Hospitalization

The crew aboard the dive vessel was able to retrieve Lamba from the water and initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). He was then transported to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. Autopsy results are still pending following the incident. Detectives have stated that there is no suspicion of foul play related to his death.

Safety and Regulations of Molasses Reef

Molasses Reef is part of a federal marine sanctuary situated off the coast of Key Largo. Due to its status as a protected area, fishing activities are strictly prohibited. The reef is renowned for its abundant marine life, making it a favored destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. Local news outlets have noted that this incident marks the second scuba diving-related death in a week within the vicinity.

Previous Diving Fatality Reported

A separate incident reported on March 13 involved a 71-year-old Missouri resident, Lonnie Lee Higgins, who died during a dive on the shipwreck Eagle off Islamorada. Divers found Higgins on the ocean floor at approximately 110 feet depth. The recent occurrence involving Lamba raises concerns regarding diving safety in the region.

Details Surrounding Lamba’s Diving Activity

Information concerning whether Abhinav Lamba was diving alone or accompanied by friends or family has not been disclosed by the sheriff’s office. The circumstances surrounding his dive, including the conditions of the water and visibility, have not been clarified, which adds to the mystery of this tragic event.
