Indian Army to Place Order for 800 km Range BrahMos Supersonic Cruise Missiles

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Army is set to make a substantial procurement of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles with a strike range exceeding 800 kilometers. This order comes in the context of heightened tensions in West Asia and aims to enhance the military’s operational capabilities. Currently, the Indian Army utilizes cruise missiles that can engage targets at distances exceeding 450 kilometers, and the updated variant will significantly expand their reach.

Defence Ministry’s Approval Expected Soon

The Defence Ministry is expected to provide the necessary clearance for this order during an imminent high-level meeting. Defence officials have indicated that the discussions will focus on the strategic advantages provided by these long-range missiles. The BrahMos missiles have demonstrated considerable effectiveness in past conflicts, particularly in the India-Pakistan engagements during Operation Sindoor in May of the previous year.

Military Strategy Shifts with New Warfare Requirements

The changing nature of warfare has prompted the Indian Army to adapt to modern threats. The ongoing conflicts involving Iran, the United States, and Israel underline the critical role of long-range missile systems in contemporary military strategy. In response to these developments, the Indian Army is also advancing the integration of drones and missiles to fulfill the demands of a new generation of warfare.

Enhancement of Military Capabilities Through Structural Reforms

The Army is undertaking significant structural reforms to bolster its combat capabilities. This includes the establishment of specialized drone regiments and platoons within both artillery and infantry divisions. At the same time, the Indian Defence forces are prioritizing the creation of a dedicated missile force and increasing overall missile inventory.

Domestic Production of Drones and Missiles

In addition to acquiring new missile systems, the Indian Army has initiated the domestic production of drones within its workshops. The aim is to achieve large-scale manufacturing capabilities to support both current and future operational needs. The BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles are developed through a partnership between India and Russia, with significant indigenization of the latter stages of production.

Future Development of Next-Generation BrahMos Missiles

The Indian military is also planning the development of next-generation BrahMos missiles. This new variant is intended to be compatible with indigenous platforms, including the Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas. Implementing these advanced systems into their arsenal aims to enhance India’s defensive and offensive strategies in line with contemporary military requirements.
