India Prioritises Safety of 9,000 Nationals in Iran Amid Rising Tensions

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has initiated a high-priority diplomatic campaign to ensure the safety of its citizens in Iran, amid escalating tensions in West Asia. During a press briefing on Thursday, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, stated that the Indian government is focused on the dual objectives of protecting its nationals and securing energy supply chains. Currently, approximately 9,000 Indian nationals, including students and professionals, are in Iran, with some being assisted in returning home through embassy support.

Communication with Iranian Officials

Jaiswal revealed that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has held a series of telephone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. These discussions, totaling three in recent days, centered on the safety of commercial shipping and the protection of India’s energy security. The recent dialogues have reportedly led to stabilizing the movement of Indian oil tankers through the crucial Strait of Hormuz, vital for India’s energy imports.

Embassy Assistance for Nationals

The Ministry of External Affairs is actively facilitating the safe passage of Indian nationals wishing to leave Iran, especially students, pilgrims, and business professionals. Jaiswal informed that prior advisories have prompted many expatriates, primarily students, to depart Iran. “Our mission issued advisories on January 14 and February 23. As a result, several Indian nationals have returned home,” he added. The Indian Embassy in Tehran is currently helping those who want to leave the country by providing logistical support for exiting through Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Efforts to Relocate and Assist Nationals

In a move to enhance safety, the Indian Embassy has started relocating nationals, including students and pilgrims, from Tehran to safer cities within Iran. Those who choose to exit Iran are being assisted with visas and provided guidance for crossing land borders. Jaiswal mentioned that the Embassy is in continuous contact with community members to offer requisite assistance. “We are facilitating movement for individuals who intend to travel to Azerbaijan and Armenia to catch flights back to India,” he said.

Consular Support and Advisory Issued

The mission in Tehran has been proactive in issuing travel advisories, with the latest one dated March 9. It emphasizes the need for Indian nationals to adhere to these guidelines while navigating their options for exiting the country. The Embassy continues to maintain ongoing communication with the Indian community to provide consular support in light of the current situation.

Broader Diplomatic Engagement in the Region

India’s diplomatic initiatives extend beyond its immediate concerns in Iran. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reportedly engaging with leaders across the Gulf to advocate for regional stability. Emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy, Modi is actively urging leaders to pursue peaceful resolutions, reiterating that the welfare of Indian nationals remains a top priority. Jaiswal noted that these conversations have focused on averting civilian casualties and securing peace.

Regional Security Context

As tensions rise, multiple reports indicate explosions in Tehran and surrounding cities as a result of ongoing US-Israeli strikes. Additionally, Iraq has suspended oil port operations following attacks on foreign vessels. Other Gulf nations, such as Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia, are taking measures to intercept Iranian missile operations. The escalating violence underscores the complexity of the security landscape in West Asia, warranting vigilance and diplomatic engagement from India.
