India Faces Weather Contrast: Snowfall in North, Heatwave Risk in Plains

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is poised for a noticeable weather contrast tomorrow, with northern mountain regions set to experience new snowfall while various plains and coastal areas prepare for a premature surge in summer temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that maximum temperatures across many parts of northwest India may soar four to six degrees Celsius above the seasonal average. In central regions adjacent to the northwest, an increase of three to five degrees Celsius is also anticipated.

Western India on Alert for Rising Heat

Significant warmth is building in western India as cities like Mumbai and parts of coastal Gujarat have already exceeded the 37 degrees Celsius mark, indicating the potential for heatwave conditions. According to Devendra Tripathi, the founder of Mausam Tak and a weather analyst for Kisan Tak, several states are facing heatwave alerts even as cooler weather approaches the north. He mentioned in a recent update that while a weak western disturbance is set to affect northern India, the heatwave threat remains for many regions.

Forecast for the Plains

Independent weather analyst Navdeep Dahiya emphasized that the unusual rise in temperatures is projected to continue throughout the week. Many areas in Rajasthan, including cities such as Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, have already recorded temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius. By the weekend, the mercury could approach 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the state. Similarly, capital cities such as Delhi, along with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are predicted to experience temperatures ranging from 34 to 36 degrees Celsius during this time.

Snowfall Expected in the Western Himalayas

In contrast, the Western Himalayan region can expect some relief as the IMD forecasts isolated to scattered light rain or snowfall from March 7 to March 11 due to a weak western disturbance. This disturbance is anticipated to bring a fresh wave of light precipitation, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, starting tomorrow. However, the IMD has clarified that this system is not substantial enough to significantly lower temperatures in the scorching plains.
