India Criticizes Pakistan at UNSC Over Airstrikes in Afghanistan

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has expressed its strong disapproval of Pakistan during a recent session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), highlighting the severe implications of airstrikes conducted in Afghanistan. These operations have resulted in the deaths of 185 civilians, as reported by UNAMA on March 6, 2026, with approximately 55 percent of the casualties being women and children. Harish Parvathaneni, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, called for accountability, asserting that such actions contradict professed commitments to international law and Islamic solidarity. He described these airstrikes, carried out during the holy month of Ramadan, as a significant offense against both international law and the sovereignty of Afghanistan.

Concerns Over Economic Impact

Parvathaneni raised additional concerns beyond the immediate humanitarian crisis, pointing out the ongoing economic challenges inflicted on Afghanistan. He referred to the situation as trade and transit terrorism, criticizing the obstruction of essential trade routes, which exacerbates the nation’s vulnerabilities. The Indian envoy highlighted the disconnection between UN declarations aimed at supporting Land Locked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and the current realities faced by Afghanistan, emphasizing that such economic isolation must not be weaponized.

Support for Afghan Sovereignty and Integrity

In his remarks, Parvathaneni reaffirmed India’s commitment to uphold the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Afghanistan. He emphasized that while India condemns the recent military actions by Pakistan, the nation continues to support Afghanistan’s independence and stability. He called for a recognized approach that aligns with the legitimate rights of Afghan citizens and their need for economic and political autonomy.

Call for Global Action Against Terrorism

Addressing the persistent threat of terrorism, the Indian envoy urged a coordinated international response to eradicate links between terrorist organizations such as ISIL and Al Qaida, and their affiliates like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. He identified proactive measures against cross-border terrorism as critical to restoring peace and stability in the region. Parvathaneni stressed the need for the global community to abandon a business-as-usual mentality, advocating for adaptive policies that prioritize the aspirations and welfare of the Afghan populace.

Highlighting Afghan Resilience and India’s Commitment

Despite the ongoing trials facing the Afghan people, Parvathaneni underlined their resilience. He noted the vibrancy of Afghan youth, particularly mentioning their enthusiasm for cricket, as evidenced by the national team’s recent performance in the Cricket World Cup. Furthermore, he underscored India’s ongoing support for Afghanistan, detailing that India has initiated over 500 development projects and remains dedicated to humanitarian aid aimed at uplifting the Afghan society. Parvathaneni concluded by affirming India’s resolve to stand by the people of Afghanistan, underscoring a long-term commitment to their prosperity and aspirations.
