Shreesh Jadhav is an exemplary figure known for his remarkable academic achievements. Born in 1968, he demonstrated exceptional scholarly aptitude from an early age. In 1985, he secured the second rank in the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), gaining admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur. Throughout his studies, Jadhav excelled, achieving nearly perfect grades across various subjects.

His academic journey continued to impress as he later topped the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) in Computer Science, attaining an extraordinary 99.92 percentile. These accomplishments positioned him among the foremost talents of his generation, with prospective opportunities in high-paying careers in technology or research standing readily available.

Transition from Corporate Aspirations to Monastic Life

After completing his BTech in 1989 and pursuing a PhD, which he concluded in 1995, Shreesh Jadhav made an unexpected decision. He opted not to follow the traditional paths of corporate or international roles, instead choosing to join the Ramakrishna Mission at Belur Math. This decision marked his transformation into a monk, adopting the name Swami Sarvottamananda.

In articulating his choice, Jadhav expressed that he left behind transient pursuits in favour of something more profound, prioritising a life dedicated to service and spiritual growth over material accomplishments. After joining the mission, he employed his academic skills in various roles, beginning as a resident teacher in a school under the Ramakrishna Mission in Narottamnagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

Eventually, his career progressed as he took on positions such as honorary lecturer at Ramakrishna Mission Shilpamandira, and later, he served as Dean of Research and Coordinator of the Computer Science Department at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda University. His journey illustrates significant commitment to education and community service.

Continuing Academic Contributions as a Monk

Even with his monastic lifestyle, Jadhav maintained a strong focus on academic contributions. His research primarily centred on computational geometry, graph and geometric algorithms, as well as discrete applied mathematics. Notably, his undergraduate project garnered recognition from the Association for Computing Machinery, marking a significant achievement for an individual at that academic level.

His scholarly articles have been published in esteemed international journals and conferences, showcasing his continued influence within the academic community. He further took on the responsibility of guiding students while dedicated to living a life characterised by simplicity and service, illustrating that a monk’s life need not be devoid of scholarly pursuit.

In acknowledgment of his contributions, IIT Kanpur awarded him the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2009. This recognition underscores the impact he has made as one of the institution’s notable alumni, even as he opted for a lifestyle that veered from the conventional markers of success.
