Hundreds of Drones Strike US Military Bases in Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and UAE

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran announced on Wednesday that it launched 230 drones targeting installations housing US troops across the Middle East. Notably, these attacks included a base in Erbil, located in northern Iraq, and the Ali Al Salem Air Base alongside Camp Arifjan in Kuwait. According to the IRGC, these actions are part of their significant offensive steps in response to escalating tensions following recent strikes involving Israel and the United States.

Casualties and Incidents Reported

In Kuwait, the Ministry of Health confirmed the death of an 11-year-old girl who succumbed to injuries inflicted by falling shrapnel from a drone attack. Emergency medical services attempted resuscitation during transport to Al-Amiri Hospital, but the girl was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, as per updates shared on X. Meanwhile, reports from Iraq indicated that a drone aimed at the logistical support section of the US embassy in Baghdad occurred near the international airport. This incident took place shortly after a different drone attack was thwarted in the vicinity of the airport, according to Iraq’s security media department.

Further Attacks Across the Region

Security sources disclosed that two drones targeted a US military facility and a hotel in Erbil, a significant city in northern Iraq. Additionally, a building in Sulaimaniyah, also located in the Iraqi Kurdish region, was hit by a drone strike on Tuesday evening, with verified footage showing flames ascending from the site following the explosion. In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Defence reported intercepting and destroying a drone in the Eastern Province, although no further details regarding its origins or impact were provided.

Incidents in the United Arab Emirates

Multiple attacks were recorded in the United Arab Emirates, including strikes directed at the US consulate in Dubai and a port situated in Fujairah. On the same day, the US embassy in Saudi Arabia and the consulate in the UAE were also targeted by drone assaults. Consequently, the US State Department issued a statement authorizing the evacuation of nonemergency government staff from the region.

Background and Current Status of Attacks

The escalation of drone strikes follows Iran’s decision to target both Israeli positions and US military assets in Gulf nations, a response triggered by initial attacks conducted by Israeli and US forces on February 28, which coincided with the reported killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Although the scale and frequency of these attacks appear to be diminishing, analysts have pointed out that even a limited number of strikes could significantly disrupt air travel and security in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.

Potential for Ongoing Tensions

Despite a reported reduction in the intensity of drone attacks, observers continue to voice concerns about their potential repercussions. The ongoing conflict remains a critical issue for GCC countries, which are grappling with the threat posed by drone strikes and their consequent disruptions within the region’s airspace. The complexity of these developments underscores the persistent instability that has emerged from the recent spate of violence.
