High Demand for Niche Tech Skills Drives Indian Engineering Intern Packages Up to ₹60 Lakh

The CSR Journal Magazine

Internships are traditionally seen as a pathway for students to gain vital industry experience. Recently, however, certain engineering students in India have encountered offers as high as Rs 30 lakh per month. According to a report by Bloomberg, high-frequency trading (HFT) firms are offering these remarkable salaries to attract talent possessing a rare blend of advanced mathematics, programming skills, and financial acuity.

For instance, Quadeye, a Gurugram-based firm, is reportedly ready to pay Rs 30 lakh for an intern, equating to Rs 60 lakh for a two-month engagement. Other firms, including Graviton Research Capital, are offering around Rs 50 lakh for the same duration, while prominent global entities like IMC Trading and Optiver are providing packages ranging from Rs 50 to 60 lakh.

Skills That Command Premium Salaries

The demand extends beyond mere basic financial literacy. These firms seek candidates with quantitative skills capable of applying mathematics, statistics, and computer programming to develop algorithms for trading decisions. Typically, quant researchers analyse extensive market data for patterns and assess whether these can lead to profitable strategies.

In the realm of high-frequency trading, the emphasis lies on utilising sophisticated algorithms and computing power to seize market opportunities at exceptional speed. A slight edge in the speed of information processing can significantly influence the outcomes when firms execute high volumes of trades.

Graviton has underscored its priority for candidates possessing strong data-driven problem-solving skills over traditional markers like tenure or titles. The firms emphasise the ability to translate mathematical and coding proficiency into a competitive advantage in trading.

Challenges in the Derivatives Market

Despite the lucrative opportunities, India’s derivatives market faces significant challenges, characterised by stringent regulations and dwindling trading activity. According to Reuters, the average daily turnover in equity futures and options fell by 27.1 per cent in July, reaching Rs 1.7 trillion, which marks the lowest level since November 2023.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has indicated that nearly all profits attributable to proprietary and foreign investors stem from algorithmic trading. Consequently, even as the trading landscape grows more complex, the competition for proficient quants is intensifying due to their ability to navigate and exploit these challenging conditions.

Recognising the potential of skilled quants, firms are looking to hire individuals capable of adjusting to fluctuating market conditions, formulating new trading strategies, and identifying opportunities that might elude conventional trading methods. This high demand is further amplified by global HFT firms directly recruiting from top engineering institutions in India.

The Changing Landscape of Financial Skills

This competition is not solely between Indian trading firms; international companies have become increasingly aggressive in their recruitment efforts. IMC and Optiver have notably escalated their internship packages, demonstrating a shift in hiring strategies aimed at securing skilled personnel directly from campuses.

Moreover, Indian firms are broadening their scope beyond domestic equity derivatives to include various asset classes and international markets. This evolution is redefining what constitutes valuable expertise in finance for future generations.

In summary, understanding market mechanics is no longer sufficient; the ability to leverage data, mathematics, and technology will likely determine the success of future trading strategies.
