A new BTech programme in civil engineering conducted in Hindi has been launched at Shri G S Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS) in Indore. This initiative, effective from the academic year 2026-27, aims to support students transitioning from Hindi-medium schooling to higher technical education. To further encourage enrolment, the Madhya Pradesh government will provide a Rs 2 lakh incentive to students during their final year.

Student Insights and Departmental Perspectives

The programme has been well received, with approximately 20 out of the 30 available seats already filled. Students expressed relief at the opportunity to study in a language they are fluent in. Rohit Sharma, an engineering student, shared that studying in English would have necessitated extensive use of online resources such as Google and ChatGPT to clarify challenging topics. He believes that learning in Hindi facilitates better understanding, especially when teachers can explain technical terms in English as needed.

This initiative is also aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP), which promotes multilingual education. By offering a civil engineering programme in Hindi, SGSITS aims to bridge the gap between regional languages and technical disciplines, thereby enhancing access to engineering education for Hindi-speaking students.

Efforts and Preparations Over the Years

SGSITS has reportedly invested significant time and effort into developing this programme over the past four years. Vivek Tiwari, an assistant professor in the civil engineering department, mentioned that faculty members worked diligently to translate English technical learning materials into Hindi. Additionally, the institute organised workshops to equip teachers with the skills necessary for effective instruction in Hindi.

The conversion of technical content has aimed to streamline the learning process and make complex engineering principles more approachable for students. As part of the curriculum, students will also receive training in English-language proficiency, ensuring they are well-prepared for professional demands and higher education opportunities in a globalised context.

Officials at SGSITS maintained that the introduction of the Hindi medium does not preclude the importance of English. The educational model is designed to create a balanced learning environment where students are empowered to grasp technical subjects while developing their English communication skills. This approach reflects a comprehensive strategy to prepare students for a diverse range of career paths.
