Haldia Showdown: Suvendu Adhikari Targets Mamata, Invokes ‘Jamaat’ Remark

The CSR Journal Magazine

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee while addressing a ‘Vijay Sankalp Sabha’ in Haldia, asserting that he would defeat her in Bhabanipur in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Election 2026.

Speaking ahead of filing his nomination papers, Adhikari called for the ousting of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and issued a direct political challenge, claiming that the BJP would secure all three seats in the Haldia subdivision this time.

Adhikari reiterated his confidence of defeating the Chief Minister, drawing parallels with the Nandigram contest. “Just as in Nandigram in 2021, Mamata Banerjee will face defeat in Bhabanipur this time as well,” he said. He further asserted that the BJP would achieve a decisive edge at the grassroots level. “We will secure a lead of 500 votes in every booth,” he claimed, projecting a strong performance for his party in the region.

‘Jamaat’ remark and political pitch

In a strongly worded statement, Adhikari raised concerns over the direction of state politics. “Bengal must be saved from the clutches of the Jamaat. West Bengal cannot be allowed to turn into Bangladesh,” he said, adding that the people of the state had “awakened” and were ready for change.

He also alleged that the state should remain “in the hands of Bengalis” and not be influenced by “infiltrators,” intensifying his attack on the ruling party.

Dharmendra Pradhan echoes criticism

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who also addressed the rally, backed Adhikari’s remarks and criticised the TMC government.

Pradhan alleged that Mamata Banerjee lacked substantive issues to campaign on and was resorting to politicising food habits. Referring to claims that a BJP government would ban fish and egg consumption, he dismissed the allegation, stating that he personally consumes both.

He further accused the state government of failing to deliver on key issues and engaging in fear-driven narratives ahead of elections.

Focus on jobs and women’s safety

Raising governance concerns, Adhikari questioned the state government’s performance on employment and law and order. “We demand jobs in Bengal; we demand safety for women,” he said.

He also targeted alleged dynastic politics, criticising Abhishek Banerjee. “Opportunities should be for all, not limited to a few,” he added.

With political rhetoric sharpening ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the Haldia rally reflects the BJP’s aggressive campaign strategy in West Bengal. As leaders escalate their attacks, the state is set to witness an intense electoral battle in the months ahead.
