A deadly road accident occurred late Friday night in Gorakhpur. A speeding car crushed seven members of the same family sitting outside their home. The incident occurred in Raghunathpur Bhagwanpur village on the Balapar-Tikariya road in Gorakhpur.
According to reports, the accident took place around 10:50 PM at night on Friday. The victims were allegedly seeking respite from the heat, resting on cots outside their residence in the open.
Victims Hit While Sitting Outside
The police reports suggest that the speeding car was reportedly returning from a wedding procession. The car was traveling at a speed of approximately 100 km/h. The tragedy occurred after the car lost control near Malang Sthan intersection and veered off course.
The car ran over the family members who were gathered outside the home of Saeeda Khatoon. The car going to the Paniyara wedding procession came at a high speed from the Malang Sthan intersection and crushed the people sleeping on the cot.
Names of all the family members
Two members of the family Saeeda Khatoon (30) and her 16-year-old daughter Sufia died on the spot. The remaining five members of the family were injured critically. The injured were identified as Rabia Khatoon (32), Maryam (50), Badre Alam (17), Zubair (14), and Nihal (4). All the family members were rushed to BRD Medical College for treatment. Their conditions are reported to be critical.
Chaos After the Incident
Eyewitnesses present on the scene stated that four individuals were inside the car at the time of the accident. After the collision, three people from the car managed to flee the scene. However, one of them was caught by locals and handed over to the police after being beaten.
Soon the locals informed the police and the officials arrived at the scene to seize the car. However, tensions escalated among villagers, who clashed with the police in anger. To curb the crowd additional police forces from Gulriha and Chiluatal police stations. The police force had to be deployed to control the situation. After calming the crowd, the car was removed with the help of a crane and taken to the local police station.
Investigation Underway
SP City Abhinav Tyagi confirmed the deaths and stated that a probe is ongoing. “One suspect is currently in custody and is being interrogated. We are investigating the sequence of events that led to the tragedy,” he said.
The incident has caused a wave of grief and outrage in the area, raising serious concerns about speeding and road safety, particularly during night hours.
