Five journalists, including Al Jazeera journalist Anas Al Sharif were killed in a strike at Gaza City near al-Shifa hospital by Israel on Sunday. The strike happened a few moments after Anas posted a video on intense bombardment on X, killing him and four others.
The Qatari broadcaster has confirmed the killing, stating the attack happened near the main entrance of al-Shifa hospital where many journalists were stationed. In an official statement by Shifa hospital, a total of seven people have been killed, who were staying in a tent near the hospital.
In a statement the Israeli military has accused Al Sharif of leading the Hamas terrorist attack that has been attacking Israeli civilians and military bases.
An Israeli military statement read, “Anas Al Sharif served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organisation and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF troops.”
Others who lost their lives included correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, Moamen Aliwa and their assistant Mohammed Noufal.
A few moments before the strike, Al Sharif shared on X that the escalated bombardment in Gaza City’s eastern and southern areas. In his last recorded video the thunderous sound of missile strikes felt in the background. “Non-stop bombing For the past two hours, the Israeli aggression on Gaza City has intensified.”
Different journalist groups from Palestine and across the globe condemned the killing of media personnel and this attack and a UN expert a few days back had warned that such an attack might happen. In July a Committee to Protect Journalists had informed the UN regarding the attack and had requested help for Sharif.
Ever since the war began in October, Israel has accused Journo Sharif of having ties to Hamas. This deadly war began with the killing of 1200 people, and 251 taken hostages.
