Gautam Gambhir Takes Legal Action Against Identity Misuse via AI Deepfakes

The CSR Journal Magazine

India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has approached the Delhi High Court to address the unauthorized use of his identity through AI-generated deepfakes and impersonation. This legal action follows a notable increase in fake videos and misleading content circulating online that exploit his name, likeness, and voice. The civil suit seeks the protection of his personality rights and demands damages amounting to Rs 2.5 crore, in addition to an urgent request for the removal of such content.

Concerns Over Identity Misuse

The case reflects a larger issue regarding the misuse of public figures’ identities in the digital age, particularly through AI technologies that facilitate face-swapping and voice cloning. Gambhir expressed concerns that his identity has been weaponized by anonymous users to disseminate misinformation and profit financially at his expense. He emphasized that this situation transcends personal grievances, addressing significant legal and ethical implications for public figures in an era dominated by artificial intelligence.

Achievements Amid Challenges

Gambhir, who recently led the Indian cricket team to its first T20 World Cup title defense in 2026, has faced increased online trolling alongside impersonation attempts. His coaching career has also celebrated victories in the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup in 2025, marking a period of notable success. However, the emergence of sophisticated deepfake technology has heightened the frequency of misleading content associated with him, creating further challenges in maintaining his public image.

Details of the Legal Case

The legal filing documents several instances of fabricated videos that gained significant traction on various platforms. One particular fake video, which falsely depicted Gambhir announcing his resignation, attracted over 2.9 million views. Another misleading clip, which misrepresented his commentary on senior players, garnered over 1.7 million views. The suit names 16 defendants, including individual social media accounts, major e-commerce sites like Amazon and Flipkart, as well as key intermediaries, including Meta, X, and Google YouTube. Notably, government entities are also included to facilitate the enforcement of any court orders.

Legal Provisions and Requests

The petition highlights relevant provisions under the Copyright Act of 1957, the Trade Marks Act of 1999, and the Commercial Courts Act of 2015, referencing prior rulings by the Delhi High Court that affirm the significance of personality rights. Gambhir is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent any unauthorized use of his identity, particularly through AI technologies like deepfakes, face-swapping, or morphing. In addition, he has filed an immediate request for the removal of all infringing content and a cessation of its distribution pending the court’s deliberation on the matter.
