Police have arrested prime accused Debangshu Biswas in the Haridevpur gang rape case. The accused was caught from Tollygunge area on Thursday night. Earlier, the police had arrested the other accused Chandan Malik in this case. The accused will be produced in court on Friday and an application will be made to take him into police custody.

On September 6, a young woman filed a complaint of gang rape at the Haridevpur police station. Based on her complaint, the police filed an FIR and started an investigation. The FIR named two accused. According to the complainant’s statement, she had gone to a house in Malancha area with a friend on September 5. Allegedly, she was raped by two friends there. According to police sources, the two accused were absconding since the incident.

What exactly had happened?

Based on the complaint, the Haridevpur police station started an investigation and began searching for the accused. Search operations were also conducted at various places. A few days after the incident, the police arrested one accused from Burdwan station. However, the other accused was absconding. According to police sources, he was arrested from Tollygunge police station area at around 2:15 am on Thursday.

The police are investigating whether anyone else is also involved in the incident. The victim alleged that she was introduced to Chandan Malik several months ago. He introduced himself as the member of a famous Durga Puja committee in Kolkata. Thorough Chandan, she met Debangshu. The soon became friends and used to talk often. The girl’s birthday was on September 5.

Allegedly, Chandan and Debangshu took the victim to a flat in Regent Park area by luring her to a party on her birthday. The girl was allegedly gang raped there, following which she returned home. Later, a gang rape complaint was filed at Haridevpur police station.
