Four Students Arrested After Kerala Mini Cooper Crash Kills Three

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday when a Mini Cooper collided with a scooter on Airport Road in Nedumbassery, Kerala, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The Ernakulam rural police have apprehended all four occupants of the vehicle involved in the crash. Reports suggest that the car was allegedly travelling at speeds exceeding 120 km/h at the time of the collision.

The driver of the Mini Cooper, Suhail Sajeev, aged 19, along with passengers Ninav, also 19, and two others, Ameen Sha and Joyal S Anto, both aged 19 and hailing from Alappuzha, were taken into custody. Suhail was charged with negligent driving and culpable homicide not amounting to murder, while the other three were charged with abetment for allegedly permitting him to drive while under the influence of alcohol.

All four individuals are reportedly college students, and the police are continuing their investigation into the events leading up to the crash. The incident has raised significant concern regarding road safety and the dangers of driving under the influence.

Investigation and Evidence Collection

In the ongoing investigation, authorities have uncovered an Instagram video posted by Suhail Sajeev on April 20, which shows the Mini Cooper’s speedometer reaching 220 km/h. The video, lasting 11.8 seconds, displays a speed of 204 km/h before climbing further, with loud music playing in the background. This footage has raised questions about the driving habits of the accused.

Investigators have also located additional videos that allegedly show Suhail driving at similarly high speeds on multiple occasions. The police suspect that the occupants had consumed alcohol at various bars prior to the accident, and they are currently gathering evidence, including CCTV footage and receipts from these establishments.

The bodies of the deceased—Devika, aged 21, from Wayanad; Gopika, aged 22, from Palakkad; and Iyas, aged 21, from Karnataka—have been returned to their families following autopsy procedures. The police are awaiting laboratory results to confirm whether Suhail was indeed under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Legal Actions and Consequences

In response to the incident, the excise department has filed occurrence reports against three bars located in Kadavanthra, Palarivattom, and a star hotel in Nedumbassery. These reports were initiated based on information received from the police regarding the consumption of alcohol by the youths before the fatal crash.

According to excise officers, the group is believed to have visited these establishments between 9:30 pm and 1:30 am on Saturday night, prior to the incident. The motor vehicle department is also reportedly taking steps to suspend Suhail’s driving licence as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.

This incident has sparked a broader conversation about road safety and the responsibilities of drivers, particularly in relation to alcohol consumption. Authorities are emphasising the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
