Flydubai Crew Demanded Release Of Tied-Up Omani Co-Pilot Following Attack on Indian Captain

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent altercation aboard a flydubai flight has led to claims from Israeli passengers that some crew members requested the release of an Omani co-pilot who allegedly assaulted an Indian captain. The incident occurred during a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, during which the crew was confronted by a group of passengers who subdued the co-pilot following the alleged attack.

According to passengers Tzvika Manes and Daniel Schlichter, the crew’s demand to untie the co-pilot, Hamam al-Hammami, sparked an argument within the aircraft. Manes was quoted as saying that the crew members referred to the co-pilot as a ‘terrorist,’ causing confusion among those on board. Schlichter mentioned that this request led to growing mistrust towards the crew, although no members have been accused of any involvement in the initial attack.

Despite the ongoing investigation, flydubai has chosen not to comment specifically on crew conduct during the incident, stating they are fully cooperating with authorities. The airline has confirmed they are working alongside investigators to ensure the situation is addressed appropriately.

Actions Taken by Passengers Following the Attack

The tension on the flight escalated after Captain Smit Machchhar was reportedly attacked by al-Hammami using a crash axe. Despite sustaining injuries, Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers Manes, Yaniv Hayoun, and Asaf Rajuan to intervene. The three passengers apprehended the co-pilot and restrained him, using zip ties and wires from headphones until they could secure him adequately.

During the confrontation, the passengers provided assistance to the injured co-pilot, including placing an oxygen mask on him. Schlichter remarked that their intention was to ensure he survived so that he could face questioning regarding the attack. This sentiment was echoed by Manes, who stated they did not seek to cause further harm to al-Hammami; rather, their goal was to protect themselves and fellow passengers.

Following the struggle, the situation further intensified when crew members insisted they were in command of the aircraft and requested that passengers leave the cockpit area. The passengers ultimately decided to escort the crew away from the cockpit, taking them to seats further back in the plane, while another individual was tasked with guarding the cockpit entrance.

Airplane’s Emergency Landing and Aftermath

The aircraft ultimately made an emergency landing at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, assisted by reserve pilots who were travelling on board and took control of the aircraft amidst the chaos. Reports indicate that the plane experienced a rapid descent of over 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the incident, raising concerns about passenger safety and aircraft integrity.

Once on the ground, Saudi authorities conducted a preliminary investigation into the incident and subsequently transferred the co-pilot to officials in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE authorities have since classified the incident as a terrorist attack, escalating the severity of the situation and prompting further investigations.

While the incident remains under investigation, the responses from both flydubai and various governmental bodies indicate the seriousness with which they are treating the matter. Authorities continue to pursue inquiries to understand the full ramifications of the event and the motivations behind the attack.
