Eight Hundred Tourists Stranded in Sikkim’s Lachen After Road Damage

The CSR Journal Magazine

Approximately 800 tourists are currently stuck in Lachen, located in the Mangan district of Sikkim, due to a breach in the connecting road to Chungthang. Officials reported that the road damage occurred near the Tarum Chu bridge, disrupting travel to and from the area. This incident has left visitors unable to proceed on their journey.

The Mangan district administration has officially announced the temporary closure of the Lachen-Chungthang Road near the affected bridge. The authorities urge people to stay informed about the situation and adhere to safety guidelines while this issue is being addressed.

Officials also indicated that immediate travel for those in Lachen is discouraged, particularly for the duration of the night. They highlighted the presence of unsafe weather conditions and the potential risks associated with traversing the compromised route.

Evacuation Plans in Place

Authorities are preparing for an evacuation operation scheduled for Monday morning, contingent on improvements in weather conditions and successful snow clearance along the Dongkya La axis. The planned route for evacuation involves travelling through Lachen to Dongkya La, on to Lachung, and ultimately reaching Gangtok.

The rescue operation will be executed in coordination with several key agencies, including local police, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), and the Indian Army. This collaborative effort aims to ensure the safety and comfort of the stranded tourists during their return.

District officials have indicated that efforts to restore the road and clear snow are being prioritised. However, the exact timing of any evacuation is dependent on real-time assessments of weather conditions and road readiness.

Ongoing Efforts and Challenges

The situation in Lachen highlights the challenges faced in maintaining connectivity in remote areas, particularly during inclement weather. Officials are on high alert, closely monitoring the evolving circumstances as they deploy resources to facilitate a timely resolution.

Restoration teams are working diligently to clear snow and debris from the roadways. While significant progress has been made, the situation remains fluid, necessitating ongoing evaluations of safety conditions. Community members in Lachen have also been advised to make provisions for their stay until the evacuation can safely occur.

As the situation develops, local authorities encourage families and friends of the stranded tourists to remain calm and patient. Regular updates will be provided to keep all concerned parties informed about the status of the evacuation plans and overall road conditions in the area.
