The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has declared an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the families of each deceased individual involved in the recent tunnel collapse in Namchi district, Sikkim. The incident occurred on July 20, 2026, at the under-construction Head Race Tunnel (HRT) of the Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project. Reports suggest that a sudden methane gas explosion within the rock formations caused dense fumes and toxic gases to fill the tunnel.

As rescue operations continue, 13 bodies have been recovered from the scene, with efforts ongoing to locate the remaining victims among the 25 personnel who were trapped. NHPC has expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the affected families during this difficult time.

Ongoing Rescue Operations

Rescue efforts at the site involve close collaboration among multiple agencies, including the District Administration, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local authorities. Teams from Patel Engineering Limited (PEL) and Eastern and Western Coalfields Limited are also participating in the response operations. NHPC’s senior management is actively present at the site, overseeing the coordinated rescue efforts.

Emergency response protocols were promptly enacted following the accident. The NHPC reported that the explosion added a layer of complexity to the rescue operations, as responders had to navigate through the hazardous environment created by the gas eruption. Authorities continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all personnel involved in the rescue.

The site has been equipped with necessary tools and expertise to facilitate the ongoing search for trapped individuals. NHPC remains committed to making every possible effort to locate and rescue the remaining workers as soon as can be safely executed.

Government Support and Condolences

Sikkim’s Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang, announced financial assistance of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for each injured individual from the state government. This move reflects the government’s commitment to support those affected by the tragedy.

In a further demonstration of concern, Prime Minister Narendra Modi contacted Chief Minister Tamang to discuss the situation. During this communication, the Prime Minister confirmed an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund, aimed at aiding the families of the deceased, alongside an additional Rs 50,000 for injured workers.

Such actions highlight the immediate response from both state and central authorities, aiming to provide some measure of relief to those impacted during this challenging time. The government’s financial assistance is part of a broader initiative to support victims and their families in the aftermath of the tragic event.
