Delhi Passenger Alleges Cab Scam, Charged ₹550 for T1 to T2 Ride

The CSR Journal Magazine

A man traveling between terminals at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has reported being overcharged by a cab driver. The individual detailed his experience in a post on a popular online forum, stating that he mistakenly booked a ride to Terminal 3 (T3) instead of Terminal 2 (T2). After arriving at T3, he received directions from personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to walk to T2 via the ground floor.

Cab Driver Approaches Passenger

While making his way to T2, the passenger was approached by a cab driver who discouraged him from walking. The driver stated that the walk would take 20 to 30 minutes and offered him a ride. He mentioned, “Pay whatever fare shows on Ola.” However, the passenger had only Uber installed on his phone and repeatedly asked for a fare estimate, but the driver did not provide a definite answer.

Unexpected Fare and Bargaining

Assuming the journey would cost around Rs 100 to Rs 200, he decided to accept the ride. According to the passenger, during the ride, the driver revealed that the fare was Rs 650. After some negotiation, the passenger managed to reduce the cost to Rs 550. He characterized the experience as a “complete scam” and cautioned other travelers against taking cabs for short distances between terminals without confirming fares in advance.

Feedback from Online Community

The Reddit post attracted numerous comments, with several users emphasizing the walk from T3 to T2 is typically only 10 to 12 minutes. Some participants highlighted that for Terminal 1 (T1), a shuttle bus is necessary to reach T2 or T3. Various commenters expressed concerns about the prevalence of scams at the airport, with one user suggesting that travelers must remain vigilant to avoid being taken advantage of.

Common Experience Among Travelers

Describing the scenario as a typical airport hustle, one user remarked on the frequent nature of such incidents, advising that it is best practice not to enter a cab without agreeing on the fare upfront. On the contrary, some comments criticized the passenger, asking why he would believe a taxi driver over CISF guidance. Others indicated that signage clearly points to T2 from T3 and that travelers could approach airport staff for help.

Advice on Free Shuttle Services

Additional users pointed out that free shuttle services are available between terminals, cautioning against the common scams like the one experienced by the man. The overall consensus from commenters implores travelers to utilize airport resources appropriately to avoid unnecessary expenses.

The incident has shed light on potential challenges faced by passengers at Delhi Airport, prompting discussions around safety and informed decision-making.
