The Delhi government has reported receiving a total of 5,678 applications for financial incentives under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026, which commenced on July 1. Out of these submissions, Rs 4.8 crore has been disbursed to 1,664 applicants, according to official sources. The highest proportion of the processed applications pertains to electric two-wheelers, highlighting a significant interest in this segment of the electric vehicle market.

Among the 1,664 processed applications, 1,648 were from individuals purchasing electric two-wheelers, which collectively received Rs 4.6 crore in incentives. This reflects a strong trend among consumers towards opting for more environmentally friendly commuting options. The report indicates that a substantial 4,014 applications remain under process, signalling ongoing interest in the incentive scheme.

The government has introduced these incentives as part of a larger initiative to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles in the capital. The scheme is designed to reduce pollution levels and promote sustainable transport solutions amidst increasing concerns about air quality in urban areas.

Incentives Structure for Buyers

Data released by the government indicates that 5,621 out of the 5,678 applications pertained specifically to electric two-wheelers. Under the guidelines of the policy, buyers of electric two-wheelers can avail themselves of incentives amounting to Rs 30,000 in the first year of purchase. The incentive decreases in subsequent years, with Rs 20,000 available in the second year and Rs 10,000 in the third year, further encouraging users to transition to electric alternatives.

This tiered incentive structure aims to sustain interest in electric vehicles over a longer term, thereby reinforcing the government’s commitment to enhancing electric vehicle adoption rates within the city. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated the online portal for the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026 on July 3, enabling those interested to easily apply for these financial benefits.

Feedback from the public has shown a notable shift towards utilising electric two-wheelers, which are perceived as a practical and efficient solution for urban commuting. This move aligns with global trends in seeking cleaner transportation methods and reducing reliance on traditional fuel sources.

Scrapping Incentives Also Available

The Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2026 additionally offers incentives for individuals looking to scrap their old vehicles. Eligible owners of BS-IV or older vehicles that are being replaced by new electric ones can receive a scrapping incentive of up to Rs 1 lakh for cars and Rs 10,000 for two-wheelers. This initiative aims to promote not only the purchase of electric vehicles but also the retirement of older, more polluting vehicles from the roads.

According to data provided by the government, 41 new electric vehicle purchasers have already received incentives under this scrapping provision. The policy aims to facilitate a smoother transition to electric mobility while simultaneously addressing the issue of outdated and inefficient vehicles contributing to urban pollution.

Overall, the Delhi government’s proactive measures in rolling out both the incentive for electric vehicle purchases and the scrapping scheme represent significant steps toward environmental sustainability.
