Delhi Government Approves ₹5.6Cr Study for Munak Canal Corridor Study

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government has approved the commissioning of a ₹5.6 Crore study on traffic analysis and background planning work for setting up a 20 km elevated corridor that could connect the recently inaugurated Urban Extension Road (UER-2) to the Outer Ring Road at Inderlok in North Delhi. The project will incorporate the fencing of the canal, construction of recreational spaces, riverfront-like development, and non-motorised vehicle lanes, along with securing a major chunk of the city’s raw water supply and reducing losses.

The tender for the same was issued by the Public Works Department (PWD) on August 19, and the work aims to transform the area into a vibrant, environmentally sustainable space accessible to the public.

“The development will be inspired by local art, culture and heritage, aiming to promote tourism, public engagement and community interaction,” said a PWD official to the national media. According to PWD officials, the initiative will improve urban viability in the area by promoting non-motor transport and integrated green spaces. This is being done to enhance the ecological value of the canal corridor. The corridor will also feature multiple entry and exit transit points along its length to ensure local connectivity. The emphasis of the entire project is the sustainable rejuvenation and beautification of the Munak Canal.

Projects Roadmap

The cost of the project also involves the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the road project, which will include cost estimates, structure and landscape design, and clearances from relevant authorities.

The Munak Canal carries over 1,000 cusecs of water daily to the Delhi NCR region. The land on which the corridor is proposed is a protected forest and needs additional clearances for infrastructure work. Environmental and social feasibility assessments are also being conducted.
