Pakistan Supreme Court Rejects Government Plea for Imran Khan’s Hospital Transfer

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Pakistan Supreme Court has returned a government petition that sought to amend its order directing the transfer of Imran Khan, the former prime minister, to a private hospital for medical treatment. This decision follows the court’s instruction mandating that Khan be moved to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within two days.

The three-member bench, led by Justice Shahid Waheed, had stipulated that Khan should remain at the hospital until the next hearing on September 16. Following this order, the Pakistani government initially indicated that it would comply but later sought a review of the directive.

Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has warned that if the transfer to the hospital does not occur by 11.59 pm on Thursday, it will consider filing a contempt of court petition against the government.

Issues with Government’s Petition

PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja expressed that the state withdrew its review petition following objections from the court. He emphasised that there should be no justification for the failure to comply with the Supreme Court’s directive dated August 18 and that Khan’s transfer to the hospital should happen immediately.

In light of the returned petition, the PTI reiterated its earlier warning, stressing that the Supreme Court’s order mandating Khan’s hospital transfer remains unexecuted. The party indicated that should the order not be upheld by the midnight deadline, they are prepared to file legal actions against the government.

Concerns Over Imran Khan’s Health

The backdrop of this legal struggle includes ongoing concerns regarding Khan’s health, raised by his family and supporters. Reports allege that he has not received adequate medical attention, which has become a major point of contention.

One of the specific health issues reported is an eye condition, known as right central retinal vein occlusion. Khan has made multiple visits to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for treatment since the ailment was diagnosed in late January. This has intensified calls from his supporters for his transfer to a private facility to ensure proper medical care.

Allegations have surfaced suggesting that authorities are restricting Khan’s access to necessary healthcare, family visits, and legal representation, leading to accusations of human rights violations. The urgency of the situation is compounded by the impending court deadline for his hospital transfer.

As the deadline approaches, the focus remains on whether the Supreme Court’s order will be enforced. With the PTI affirming its commitment to uphold the legal process, the developments surrounding Imran Khan’s health remain at the forefront of public and legal scrutiny.
