Delhi Court Confirms Conviction for Sexual Harassment on Metro

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Delhi court has upheld the conviction of a man found guilty of sexually harassing a woman on a metro train, highlighting the ongoing issues of safety for women in public transport. The ruling was delivered by Additional Sessions Judge Hargurvarinder Singh Jaggi at the Saket Courts. The judge dismissed the appeal filed by the accused, emphasizing that the trial court had properly evaluated the evidence and appropriately convicted him under Sections 354 and 354A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The court noted that such incidents, particularly on public transport, are alarming and must not be treated lightly. Women frequently rely on these services for their daily commutes, making their safety a pressing concern. The judge affirmed the trial court’s convictions, stating, “The trial court rightly convicted and sentenced the appellant for offences punishable under Sections 354 and 354A IPC,” thereby maintaining the original judgment issued on May 24, 2025, and the sentencing order dated October 6, 2025.

The allegations stemmed from an incident on a Delhi Metro train traveling on the Yellow Line between Saket and INA stations. It was reported that the accused not only exposed himself but also engaged in inappropriate behavior towards a female passenger during the journey. The situation led to a complaint being lodged, prompting the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) at the INA Metro Police Station under the relevant sections of the IPC.

The trial court had sentenced the accused to one year of rigorous imprisonment alongside a fine of Rs 5,000 for the offense under Section 354 IPC, and another year with an identical fine under Section 354A IPC. Both sentences were ordered to run concurrently. During the appeal proceedings, various legal representatives participated: Advocate Anand Kumar Pandey for the appellant, Additional Public Prosecutor Santosh Kumar for the state, and Advocate Meghna Mukherjee representing the complainant.

Following a thorough review of the trial court records and the evidence presented, the sessions court found no justification for altering the earlier findings and thus dismissed the appeal. This decision reinforces the judiciary’s stance on addressing sexual harassment in public places and upholding the rights and safety of women commuters in the Delhi Metro system.
