Delhi Air Quality Worsens as AQI Reaches 267, What Could be the Reason?

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has reported a decline in air quality in the national capital as of Tuesday morning, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) rising to 267, categorising it as ‘poor’. This marks a significant increase from the previous day’s AQI of 206, which also fell within the ‘poor’ category.

This deterioration in air quality has raised concerns among residents and environmentalists alike. Several areas in Delhi are now classified as experiencing ‘very poor’ air quality conditions. This is attributed to various factors, including vehicular emissions, construction activities, and the burning of waste materials.

Experts have pointed out that such fluctuations in air quality are common during this time of year due to a combination of weather conditions and increased pollution sources. The stubble burning in neighboring states, along with local sources of pollution, significantly contribute to the region’s air quality issues.

High AQI Affecting Children and Elederly

The AQI is a crucial tool used to assess the air quality and its potential impacts on health. An AQI of 267 indicates that the air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including individuals with pre-existing health conditions, children, and the elderly. Authorities have urged vulnerable populations to minimise outdoor activities to reduce exposure to harmful pollutants.

Government agencies are actively monitoring the situation and are expected to implement measures to mitigate air pollution. Initiatives may include stricter enforcement of pollution control regulations and programs aimed at promoting cleaner alternatives for transportation and energy use.

Citizens are advised to stay informed about daily air quality updates and take appropriate precautions as necessary. Masks are recommended for outdoor activities, especially for individuals with respiratory issues. The impact of sustained poor air quality on public health remains a matter of ongoing concern.

Delhi’s AQI to Keep Fluctutating

As the winter season progresses, experts expect air quality in Delhi to continue fluctuating, posing challenges in managing pollution levels effectively. The situation calls for collective responsibility among residents, industries, and local governments to improve air quality in the capital.
