The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has initiated suo motu action in response to allegations of sexual harassment reportedly made by female students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) against a professor. This decision follows the circulation of a video on social media where the students detailed their grievances. The commission’s involvement underscores the seriousness with which such allegations are treated within educational institutions.

As per a press release from the DCW, the students claim they had submitted a formal complaint regarding the professor to the JNU Vice-Chancellor in May 2026. However, they allege that no significant action has been taken since then to address their concerns. The claims suggested a perceived inaction from the university, raising questions about the administration’s commitment to handling such matters appropriately.

The students also expressed concerns that the university may be protecting the professor involved, which, if true, would highlight issues of accountability within the institution. The gravity of these statements prompted the DCW to seek further clarification from JNU’s administration regarding the steps taken in response to the complaints.

Response from the DCW and JNU Administration

The DCW has issued a formal notice to the JNU Vice-Chancellor requesting detailed information regarding the actions taken concerning the students’ allegations. This notice seeks clarification on whether the complaint was forwarded to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), established under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, and any actions initiated by this committee.

In its communication, the commission emphasised the need for transparency and urged the university to provide an Action Taken Report (ATR) alongside any relevant documentation. If no action was taken, the commission has called for an explanation. The time frame for submitting this report has been set at three days, reflecting the DCW’s urgency in ensuring a thorough investigation into the allegations.

DCW Chairperson Lata Gupta highlighted the necessity of following due process when handling sexual harassment complaints. In a statement, she reiterated that it is crucial for the university to address complaints of this nature with utmost fairness and sensitivity, in accordance with prevailing laws and procedures.

The DCW has committed to reviewing the report submitted by JNU and will take further action based on the findings. The commission’s approach aims to ensure that the complaints raised by the students are examined thoroughly and that justice is served. Gupta’s remarks reflect the organisation’s mandate to guarantee that victims of sexual harassment receive the support and legal recourse they need.
