Connections of Shabir Ahmed Lone to Alleged Terror Plotters in India Uncovered

The CSR Journal Magazine

New Delhi: A recent investigation by the Delhi Police has led to the dismantling of a terror module believed to be operated by Shabir Ahmed Lone, who is reportedly in contact with senior commanders of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The module is said to have connections to Pakistan-based LeT handlers acting from Bangladesh. On Monday, officials announced the arrest of eight individuals linked to this group, claiming to have prevented what was characterized as a potentially serious incident.

Profile of Shabir Ahmed Lone

Shabir Ahmed Lone is identified as a long-standing associate of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, having been monitored by security agencies for nearly twenty years. Hailing from Ganderbal in Kashmir, he currently resides in Bangladesh. Lone was arrested in 2007 while allegedly attempting to execute a fidayeen attack targeting a prominent political figure, armed with an AK-47 and grenades. Following a decade in prison on terrorism charges, he was granted bail in 2019. Post-release, he is said to have fled to Bangladesh, where he reconnected with the leadership of Lashkar-e-Taiba and reestablished his operational network.

Lone’s Role in Terror Activities

According to investigators, Lone managed operations within the Indian module on behalf of the LeT and maintained direct communication with its key commanders. His connection to Hafiz Saeed, one of the masterminds behind the 26/11 attacks, is believed to place him prominently within the organization’s external operations framework. Reports indicate that Lone used encrypted messaging platforms and intermediaries to coordinate activities from Bangladesh, focusing on recruiting and radicalizing undocumented Bangladeshi migrants residing in India. Furthermore, he is accused of producing fraudulent identity documents and establishing logistical support, including a safe house located near Kolkata.

Arrests and Investigation of Potential Attack Plans

The eight individuals arrested in connection with the terror module were taken into custody in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. They reportedly worked in the garment industry while concealing their true identities with forged documentation. Security agencies are currently investigating whether this group had intentions to launch attacks at a temple or other densely populated areas in Delhi. Previous alerts had suggested the possibility of an improvised explosive device (IED) attack near the Red Fort and other high-traffic locales.

Links to Past Incidents

Authorities are also exploring potential connections between this newly uncovered network and the November 2025 car bombing that resulted in twelve fatalities near the Red Fort. Shabir Ahmed Lone, who is believed to be in Bangladesh, remains a pivotal figure in the cross-border recruitment and operational strategies of Lashkar-e-Taiba, aimed at targeting India.
