Tragedy in Garfa: Minor Assaulted and Set Ablaze for Social Media Video; Four Apprehended

The CSR Journal Magazine

A disturbing act of violent harassment for social media content has emerged from South Kolkata’s Garfa district, resulting in the arrest of four individuals, including minors.

The Assault and Attempted Burn

The incident took place on October 27 near a pond in the Nelingar neighborhood. According to law enforcement officials, the victim—a youth residing in neighboring Jadavpur was targeted by a group under the pretext of engaging in a game.

The primary suspect, identified as Arghya Saha, alongside several accomplices, forcibly blindfolded the boy and forced a helmet onto his head before physically attacking him. When the victim attempted to resist by taking off the helmet, the aggressors tried to make him swallow petrol. Upon his refusal, the group doused his body with the fuel and ignited a match, immediately catching his clothing on fire.

Swift Local Intervention

The victim managed to strip off the flaming garments while fleeing the scene. Nearby residents promptly intervened, offering immediate assistance, alerting the victim’s family, and contacting the Jadavpur police station. The minor was subsequently transported to a local medical facility, where he received treatment for non-life-threatening burn injuries.

Orchestrated for Digital Views

Investigations by local police uncovered that the entire ordeal was recorded by an underage member of the group, aiming to publish the footage as a short video reel on online platforms. Furthermore, the perpetrators had coerced the victim into falsely claiming to authorities that the act was a consensual stunt performed for social media.

Legal Action and Arrests

Following a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s family, law enforcement registered a case under charges of attempted murder. To date, officers have taken four individuals into custody, including the key suspect Arghya Saha and two minors involved in the incident.
