Congress MP Manish Tewari Calls for Abolition of Special Intensive Revision

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress Member of Parliament Manish Tewari recently called for the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, asserting that over 13 crore individuals have been denied their voting rights due to this process. He emphasised that the implications of the SIR are significant and far-reaching, highlighting a disparity that affects more people than the total populations of several countries.

Tewari pointed out that numerous nations have populations smaller than the number of Indian citizens allegedly deprived of their electoral rights. He noted that globally, only 16 countries have populations exceeding 10 crore, suggesting that this situation merits serious concern at a national level.

Advocating for the restoration of the electoral rolls as they existed on June 4, 2024, Tewari stated that this action would remedy the injustices claimed to have occurred during the SIR process. He further called for the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, framing his demand as one that resonates with the collective voice of the nation.

Political Support and Protests

The call to abolish the SIR has garnered support from other political figures as well. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha expressed his solidarity with the opposition’s demonstration taking place at Jantar Mantar. This protest coincides with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and is intended to voice concerns regarding the Election Commission’s actions in relation to the SIR.

Jha conveyed that the protest reflects the worries of not only opposition parties but also the broader citizenry. He articulated that the sentiments shared demonstrate a collective unease about the integrity and functioning of democratic institutions in India. According to him, many citizens believe that decision-making is being controlled by external influences, rather than through democratic processes.

In his remarks regarding the Election Commission and its handling of Form 8, Jha alleged systemic irregularities and questioned the lack of transparency surrounding these issues. He referred to media reports, stating that claims of irregularities have been downplayed or ignored, thereby undermining public faith in the electoral system.

Concerns About Electoral Integrity

Jha further elucidated on the implications of the Election Commission’s decisions, expressing that ongoing developments indicate an acknowledgment of previously raised concerns. He argued that the recent measures taken, particularly a special drive in 20 states, reflect an admission of the validity of earlier allegations regarding the SIR.

According to Jha, the apparent contradictions in the Election Commission’s statements and actions highlight a need for accountability. He accused the Commission of disregarding concerns due to perceived pride or external pressure. Jha reinforced his belief that the gravity of the situation warrants serious examination and rectification.

The discourse has also touched upon wider issues of democracy, with Jha referencing previous comments made by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. Addressing allegations concerning the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and Election Commissioner, Jha reiterated the apparent collusion that may compromise electoral integrity. He stated that no high-ranking official should be granted immunity from scrutiny regarding their actions, emphasising the need for transparency and accountability in governance.
