Communal Unrest Erupts in Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh; Curfew Imposed

The CSR Journal Magazine

Communal tensions escalated across three states in India on Thursday during various religious events. Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh saw significant unrest due to alleged vandalism at a Durga temple complex, inciting stone-pelting and altercations among local groups.

Meanwhile, in Karnataka, authorities enforced Section 144 in Bagalkot following tensions that arose during a Shivaji Jayanti procession passing a mosque. Approximately 400 kilometers away, Hyderabad also experienced a minor communal disturbance during Ramzan prayers. In all instances, police response effectively controlled the situations without any reported casualties.

Details of the Jabalpur Incident

In Jabalpur’s Sihora tehsil, tensions ignited late Thursday night after a report of vandalism at a Durga temple complex surfaced. The clashes involved stone-pelting between two groups of locals, triggered by an incident where a youth allegedly damaged the temple’s grill while prayers were being conducted simultaneously at a nearby mosque.

The severity of the confrontations prompted nearby police forces to be deployed to the scene. Authorities utilized mild lathi-charge to disperse the gathering of protesters, even as tensions remained high into Friday. Security arrangements were intensified in the area, with a heavy police presence established near both the temple and the mosque.

Reactions from Local Officials

District Collector Raghavendra Singh and senior police officer Sampat Upadhyay confirmed that no religious structures were destroyed during the incident, and there were no injuries reported. Local sources indicated that the Azad Chowk area has a history of sensitivity regarding religious activities, specifically concerning the overlapping timings of the temple’s aarti and the mosque’s namaz, which has led to friction in the past. As of now, authorities have stated that the situation has been brought under control.

Bagalkot and Hyderabad Tensions

In Karnataka’s Bagalkot, the enforcement of Section 144 followed disturbances that arose when a Shivaji Jayanti procession made its way past a mosque. The decision to restrict public gatherings aimed to prevent escalation and ensure safety.

In Hyderabad, a minor flare-up occurred during the observing of Ramzan prayers, though the situation was managed effectively by law enforcement. Local authorities in both Bagalkot and Hyderabad assured residents that police presence would be increased to maintain order as necessary.
