CJP Leaders to Seek Delhi Police Approval for Jantar Mantar Protest After Detention

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convenor Ashutosh Ranka announced on Sunday that he and fellow leaders will seek a date from Delhi Police for a peaceful protest at Jantar Mantar. This decision arises after three senior party members were detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Saturday while attempting to organise a demonstration in the capital.

The planned protest, which aimed to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar due to alleged electoral roll irregularities, was scheduled for Saturday. However, the detention of the leaders impeded these plans.

After an appearance before an executive magistrate, the detained leaders were released on Sunday. They expressed their commitment to continuing their agitation despite the earlier disruption.

Concerns Over Detention Procedures

According to reports, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, along with Ranka and Saurav Das, faced significant challenges following their flight from Mumbai. Upon landing, the leaders were allegedly removed from the aircraft and taken into custody without receiving written grounds for their detention.

This detention occurred amidst heightened security and restrictions in Delhi, which were implemented in anticipation of the planned demonstration. The CJP claimed that authorities are systematically obstructing their efforts to reach the designated protest area.

Upon their release, the leaders alleged that their mobile phones had been confiscated during their detention, and they were denied access to legal representation. Ranka described the situation as reflective of India’s Emergency period, highlighting the cancellation of trains and the harassment of protesters as tactics to deter their arrival in Delhi.

Formal Request for Protest Permission

With the protest on Saturday effectively thwarted and the leaders’ subsequent release, the CJP has resolved to formally approach Delhi Police to request permission for a demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Ranka indicated that the group aims to pursue its allegations concerning discrepancies in the electoral rolls.

He outlined that he, along with Saurav Das, legal head Ratna Singh, and other party leaders, will visit the Parliament Street Police Station at 10 am on Monday to make this request. Ranka expressed confidence that the police could provide a date within 24 hours. In the case of non-compliance, he warned that the CJP would issue another call for a protest.

The escalating situation reflects ongoing tensions as the CJP’s campaign against the Election Commission intensifies. Party leaders accuse the government of transforming their political dialogue into a confrontation with the ruling authorities, thereby complicating their efforts to advocate for electoral integrity.
