Chhattisgarh: Twenty-Five Naxals Surrender in Bijapur; Recovered Items Include Gold and Cash

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a notable development for security forces in Chhattisgarh, twenty-five Maoist cadres, comprising twelve women, surrendered in Bijapur district on March 31. This surrender resulted in the recovery of substantial assets: 7 kilograms of gold, 2.92 crore rupees in cash, and a cache of 93 weapons. The event was described by Inspector General (IG) of Bastar, P. Sunderraj, as a pivotal moment in the ongoing anti-Naxal campaign, asserting that Naxalite activities in the Bastar division have been “almost completely eradicated.”

Authorities Highlight the Importance of Surrender

Speaking during the event, IG Sunderraj emphasized the significance of the surrenders, stating that the individuals had chosen to leave behind a life of violence to reintegrate into society. He reported that the recovered items resulted from intelligence gathered prior to the surrenders. The IG remarked that this event represents a significant milestone in the history of anti-Naxal operations, referring to it as part of “Mission 2026,” which aims to fully resolve the Naxalite issue in the region.

Tributes Paid to Local Support and Security Forces

In his address, Sunderraj also expressed gratitude to security personnel and local residents for their roles in restoring peace in the Bastar region. He expressed hope that this event might encourage other Naxal cadres to surrender and join the mainstream, thereby contributing to ongoing efforts to maintain stability.

Sukma District Declared Free of Maoist Influence

In a related development, Sukma district was officially declared free from Maoist influence after the surrender and rehabilitation of two female Naxalites. Superintendent of Police (SP) Kiran G Chavan confirmed this status on April 1, noting that both women were affiliated with Company Number 8 of the Naxalite group and that their combined bounty totaled 16 lakh rupees. During their surrender, six automatic firearms were retrieved, including one INSAS LMG and two AK-47s, alongside approximately 10 lakh rupees.

Improvements Attributed to Sustained Security Efforts

SP Chavan attributed the success in Sukma to persistent operations conducted by security forces over the past two years, which included establishing camps in remote areas. He mentioned that such efforts have resulted in significant achievements, including the deaths of over 90 Naxalites, the arrest of more than 600 individuals, and the rehabilitation of about 800 others. He noted improvements in both security and development within the region, emphasizing increased accessibility and ongoing development initiatives.

Government’s Commitment to Progress in Bastar

On another front, Union Home Minister Amit Shah indicated on April 1 that the government views Naxalism in Bastar as nearly eliminated. During a session in the Lok Sabha regarding efforts to combat Left-Wing Extremism, he highlighted initiatives such as establishing schools in every village and expanding access to ration and health services. Shah affirmed that substantial steps have been taken to ensure that residents receive provisions and health care, underscoring the government’s commitment to regional progress.
