The headline reflects the recent scholarship distribution by Canara Bank, which awarded a total of ₹18.89 crore to 47,232 girl students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The initiative forms part of the Canara Bank Dr. Ambedkar Vidya Jyothi Scholarship Scheme for the financial year 2026–27. A notable event was held in Ahmedabad, where the bank aimed to advance financial inclusion and promote girls’ education.

The scholarship distribution ceremony featured Ranjeet Kumar Jha, General Manager and Circle Head of Canara Bank Ahmedabad, in the chair. The event also included Amresh Ranjan, Regional Director of the Reserve Bank of India, as the chief guest. A gathering of students, along with their families and teachers from local schools, underscored the event’s importance.

During the function, national flags were distributed to attendees, adding to the significance and patriotic atmosphere of the celebration. The event coincided with the 80th Independence Day, underlining a commitment to social empowerment.

Local Achievements Under the Initiative

Canara Bank’s Ahmedabad Circle particularly recognised the academic accomplishments of 942 meritorious SC/ST girl students, awarding ₹37.68 lakh in scholarships. This financial support was directly credited to the accounts of eligible students, with the scheme encompassing the bank’s 157 branches across rural, semi-urban, and urban areas in the region.

This initiative aims to alleviate financial pressures faced by families from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, thereby helping students to continue their education uninterrupted. Canara Bank’s efforts contribute significantly to ensuring that these young women have the necessary resources to achieve their academic goals.

The scale of the initiative reflects the bank’s broader commitment to enhancing educational access for girls, particularly those from historically marginalised communities. The aim is to support their academic journeys and facilitate better opportunities for future employment and empowerment.

Wider National Impact of the Scholarship Scheme

At a national level, the Dr. Ambedkar Vidya Jyothi Scholarship Scheme has successfully extended its reach to 47,232 deserving students across India in the current financial year. This initiative demonstrates Canara Bank’s dedication to fostering academic excellence among young women in the SC/ST communities, with a total outlay of ₹18.89 crore disbursed through approximately 7,800 branches nationwide.

The scholarship programme’s design focuses on promoting educational continuity and fostering a sense of confidence among beneficiaries. It aims to create equal opportunities for young learners who face financial and social barriers in accessing education.

The emphasis on education as a tool of empowerment aligns with national priorities to enhance gender inclusion and support historically disadvantaged groups. By investing in the education of young women, Canara Bank seeks to contribute to long-term societal growth and upliftment.
