Mumbai’s BMC elections 2026 are being held today, January 15. The battle for Mumbai’s future is on, with major parties like Mahayuti Alliance, Shiv Sena (UBT), and Congress vying for power. The elections will decide the city’s development trajectory, focusing on issues like infrastructure, housing, and environment. Voting takes place on January 15, 2026, with results on January 16.

In Mumbai, Thursday, January 15, 2026, has been declared a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act to facilitate the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

On Thursday, voting began at 7.30 am and continue until 5.30 pm with polling for 2,869 seats spread across 893 wards. The Election Commission of Maharashtra has fixed the voting hours from early morning to late afternoon to help citizens cast their ballots conveniently. If your Voter ID card isn’t available, you can still cast your vote by showing any one of several accepted identity proofs, like passport, driving licence or Aadhaar card, at the polling centre.

What remains Shut/Closed in Mumbai on BMC Election Day January 15?

All banks (public and private), the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) are closed. Commodity trading on the MCX is closed for the morning session but will open for the evening session (5:00 PM onwards).

All central, state, and semi-government offices, as well as public sector undertakings within BMC limits, are shut.

Educational institutions such as Government and civic-run schools and colleges are closed. Many private institutions have also suspended classes, particularly those serving as polling stations.

A four-day dry period has been declared with effect from January 13 to 16. All liquor shops, bars, and permit rooms will remain closed.

Most corporate and private offices have declared a holiday or provided work-from-home options to encourage their employees to vote.

What remains open and operational in Mumbai on BMC Elections Day January 15?

Mumbai’s public transport such as local trains, Metro rail and BEST buses are operating as per their normal schedules. Additional arrangements may be in place to help voters reach polling booths.

Essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies, ambulances, fire departments, and police services remain fully functional.

For convenience of the citizens, grocery stores and milk booths have been kept open. Shopping malls and movie theatres are operational on the polling day but they will mostly open after noon.

While bank branches are shut on Thursday, digital banking (UPI, ATMs, and online transfers) remains fully operational for the convenience of public.
