Maharashtra Budget 2025:

Maharashtra Budget:

Maharashtra Budget

Potential for Armed Conflict between India-Pakistan

Raj Thackrey

Mark Carney Elected As the Next Prime Minister of Canada, Vows to Defend Nation Against Trump’s Threats

Mark Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England has emerged as the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party. With an overwhelming 85.9 per cent of the vote in the leadership race, Carney is poised to take over from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Although he is set to succeed Trudeau in the coming days, the political climate suggests that Carney could call a snap election sooner than the required October deadline, with current polls showing the opposition Conservatives leading by a narrow margin.
In a powerful victory speech, Carney immediately addressed the growing tension between Canada and the United States, particularly under the leadership of President Donald Trump. He expressed strong concerns that Trump’s administration sought to exploit Canada’s resources, land, and water. “The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country,” Carney declared passionately to a cheering crowd in Ottawa. He vowed to resist any attempts to undermine Canada’s sovereignty, stressing that Trump’s policies were detrimental to Canadian businesses, families, and workers.

Carney’s Crisis Management Experience Seen as Key Asset

Notably, Carney is a political outsider, having never held an elected office. This background might usually hinder a leadership campaign, but Carney’s extensive experience in crisis management has worked in his favour. His role in navigating the global financial crisis of 2008 and managing post-Brexit instability has positioned him as a capable leader, especially in the face of Trump’s erratic policies. Carney has argued that he is uniquely prepared to tackle the challenges posed by the U.S. president’s frequent threats and tariff policies.
Carney’s main rival, Chrystia Freeland, Trudeau’s former Deputy Prime Minister, fell far behind with just 11,134 votes. Carney’s resounding victory has energized the Liberal Party, which had been on a downward trajectory in recent months. His leadership win marks a major turning point for the party, as many now see him as the ideal candidate to face Trump’s administration head-on.

“Carney Will Never Be Part of America”: Carney Declares

In his remarks, Carney also emphasised the importance of rebuilding Canada’s economy while maintaining strong, reliable relationships with trade partners. He reassured supporters that under his leadership, Canada would continue to fight for its national interests and resist any threats of annexation or domination. “Canada will never be a part of America in any way, shape, or form,” he boldly asserted, reinforcing his commitment to protecting Canadian values and sovereignty.
As Carney prepares to step into his new role, it is clear that his leadership will focus on defending Canada’s independence, strengthening its economy, and countering the challenges posed by external forces like the U.S. under Trump.

India Wins Champions Trophy 2025 Pakistan in Dubai

India Champions Trophy 2025 - Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli
India defeated New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday, March 9 2025, by four wickets. With this, India ended its 12-year drought in ICC ODI tournaments since its last victory in 2013 under the then Captain MS Dhoni.
India had to chase the score of 252 to claim the victory, which was helped by an outstanding partnership by the opening batsmen Captain Rohit Sharma who scored 76, and Shubman Gill who score 31. The partnership ranks among the highest opening partnerships in the history of ICC finals.
Captain Rohit Sharma’s leadership played a significant role in this victory, as he made bold tactical decisions, including selecting four spinners in the playing and positioning KL Rahul as a finisher at number 6. Furthermore, his composed batting under pressure set a solid foundation for India’s chase.

India’s Bowling and Fielding

The Indian spin attack was what changed the game in India’s favour by restricting New Zealand’s scoring rate. Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets each while Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja managed to get one wicket each. Yadav delivered crucial breakthroughs by dismissing Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson in quick succession. Varun Chakaravarthy’s mystery spin troubled the Kiwi batsmen consistently. And Ravindra Jadeja maintained tight control with economical bowling figures of 1/30 from his full quota of 10 overs.
Despite the impressive bowling performance, India’s fielding was uncharacteristically poor in the final, with as many as five dropped catches. Mohammed Shami and Shreyas Iyer dropped Rachin Ravindra twice early in his innings. Shubman Gill also missed a straightforward chance off Glenn Phillips in the 36th over. Additionally, Kuldeep Yadav missed an easy run-out opportunity due to poor positioning near the stumps.
New Zealand had won the toss and chosen to bat first. Kiwis scored 251, with Daryl Mitchell as the top scorer with 63 runs. Michael Bracewell scored an unbeaten half century which helped the Kiwis set a score past 250-run mark. Courtesy of India’s talented spinners, NZ was under a lot of pressure in the middle overs with choked run-flow. However, the late surge of Bracewell helped Kiwis score 79 runs in the last 10 overs alone.

India’s Chasing

While chasing, except the opening partnership, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals. There was a tense period for the blue team when they lost Gill, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma in quick succession. The match was secured as a result of a critical 61-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer (48) and Axar Patel (34).
KL Rahul also played a critical role in stabilising India’s innings, scoring an unbeaten 34 off 33 balls. His calm presence under immense pressure ensured India stayed on course. Rahul’s composed finishing act complemented Shreyas Iyer’s aggressive yet calculated approach, with Iyer contributing a valuable 48 runs.
Finally, India’s long batting line-up with a batsman of Jadeja’s calibre at number 8 saw India through and claim their third ICC Champions Trophy after their victories in 2002 and 2013.

Delhi Govt Launches Mahila Samridhi Yojana: Rs 2,500 Monthly Support for Women

On International Women’s Day, the Delhi government unveiled the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, a scheme aimed at providing financial assistance to women in the capital. Under this initiative, eligible women will receive Rs 2,500 each month. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while addressing an event organised by the BJP Mahila Morcha, shared the news and explained, “Utilising this august occasion, we convened a meeting of the Delhi Cabinet… we have fulfilled the promise we had made to Delhi’s sisters in our Sankalp Patra (manifesto) under the Mahila Samridhi Yojana.”

Rs 5,100 Crore Allocated for Financial Assistance

In a cabinet meeting held earlier that day, the government allocated a substantial Rs 5,100 crore for the scheme’s implementation. Gupta further assured that a dedicated committee, chaired by her, would oversee its rollout. This committee will include ministers such as Ashish Sood, Parvesh Verma, and Kapil Mishra. To ensure the smooth registration process for eligible women, a portal will be launched soon, Gupta confirmed. The committee will also determine the specific criteria for eligibility, which will be made available to the public.
The scheme promises to leverage technology for transparency and efficient disbursement. As stated by the government, “This scheme is not just financial benefit but a commitment to building a stronger, more self-reliant community of women in Delhi.” Aadhaar-based e-KYC will play a crucial role in this process to streamline registrations and fund transfers, providing greater security and access for women.

AAP Slams Delay, Calls it a ‘Jumla’

While the BJP celebrates the approval of this scheme, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has criticised the delay in fulfilling the promise. AAP leader Atishi expressed her frustration during a press conference, accusing the BJP of failing to meet their pre-election commitment. “PM Modi, in another rally, promised that on March 8, Rs 2,500 would be deposited into the account of the women… But today, the BJP-led Delhi government has proven that it wasn’t PM Modi’s guarantee but a ‘jumla’.”
Despite the criticism from the opposition, BJP President JP Nadda defended the scheme, stressing its significance for the women of Delhi. “The victory in the national capital would not have been possible without the support of women,” Nadda remarked during the event. He described the Mahila Samridhi Yojana as a crucial step towards advancing women’s rights in Delhi.

BJP’s Promise While Delhi Assembly Elections

The BJP had made a promise during the Delhi Assembly elections to provide Rs 2,500 monthly to women, a commitment that surpassed the AAP’s proposal of Rs 2,100. Following their overwhelming victory in the February elections, where they secured 48 of the 70 seats, the BJP moved quickly to approve the scheme. The move is seen as a response to the pressure from the AAP, which had been vocal about the delay in fulfilling this key promise.
As the government moves ahead with the implementation of the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, it aims not only to provide financial aid but to foster long-term economic empowerment for women in the city, helping them achieve greater independence and security.

Remembering the Unsung Sheroes of India’s Freedom Movement

Imagine a woman leading an armed attack dressed as a man, taking a bullet on her chest while walking with the Indian national flag at the age of 73 or leading a ‘death squad’ at 17! On International Women’s Day, let’s celebrate some of the unsung sheroes of India’s freedom movement, who gave their blood to free Mother India from British colonial clutches but their names got lost in the pages of history!

Matangini Hazra – Bengal (1869-1942)

Matangini Hazra was born in 1869 in the village of Hogla, in what is currently Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. Daughter of a poor farmer and widowed at 18, Hazra took up the flag at Mahatma Gandhi’s call to fight against the British.
A devoted follower of Gandhi, Hazra was one of the millions of women who stepped forward in response to Gandhi Ji’s call to fight against the British. Her name is remembered as one of the great freedom fighters from Bengal. With Gandhi’s call to protest against British rule in the early 1920s, Matangini Hazra was deeply inspired to contribute to the freedom struggle. Despite hardships, Matangini maintained a resilient spirit. She led a quiet life, yet devoted herself to social causes, gradually gaining the respect and trust of the local villagers.
By the time Matangini Hazra reached her 60s, she had faced arrest multiple times due to her active participation in protests, however, these experiences only made her more determined. When Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement in 1942, she was in her 70s, Matangini emerged as a prominent leader in the movement within her region. One of her most defining moments occurred during a protest march toward the Tamluk police station in Midnapore, where thousands of demonstrators aimed to seize control of the local administration.
With the Indian flag held high in her hands, Matangini continued to march forward, chanting “Vande Mataram.” The British soldiers fired at her, but she did not stop. Even after being hit, she kept moving, flag in hand, until a bullet finally brought her down. 73-year-old revolutionary Matangini Hazra was killed in a police firing on September 29, 1942 in Midnapore.
Despite being shot multiple times, Matangini made sure that the Indian flag did not touch the ground. She is counted amongst the early casualties of the Quit India Movement.

Pritilata Waddedar – Chittagong, Bangladesh (1911-1932)

In the port city of Bangladesh’s Chittagong, a European Club proudly displayed its superiority with a signboard that read, ‘Dogs and Indians not allowed’. 21-year-old revolutionary Pritilata Waddedar led an attack against this colonial dominance on the night of 23rd September 1932. Dressed as a Punjabi man, Pritilata along with other members of revolutionary leader Surya Sen’s ‘Indian Republican Army, Chittagong Branch’ made their way to the Club that night.
Armed British officers and guards opened fire in retaliation when Pritilata was hit by a bullet. The injured revolutionary chose to end her life by consuming potassium cyanide to prevent arrest. Her body was discovered by the police the next day.
Prior to this, Pritilata had also participated in the Chittagong Armoury Raid on 18th April 1930.
Pritilata Waddeder was born in Dhalghat village in Patiya Upazila of Chittagong on 5 May 1911, in a middle-class family. She passed the intermediate examination from Eden College, Dhaka in 1929, securing first place. After two years, she graduated in Philosophy with distinction from Bethune College, Calcutta.
While studying at Dhaka’s Eden College, Pritilata drew inspiration from freedom fighter Leela Nag, a close associate of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Nag led a revolutionary group that trained women in combat. During her time at Bethune College, Pritilata met Surya Sen and another woman freedom fighter Bina Das, who attempted to shoot Bengal Governor Stanley Jackson at the convocation hall at Calcutta University in 1932, the same day she was due to receive her degree.
While the British authorities refused to award Bina Das and Pritilata Waddedar a degree, in 2012, The University of Calcutta posthumously awarded degrees to both these freedom fighters. Pritilata is an inspiration to women today.

Kanaklata Barua – Assam (1924-1942)

Kanaklata Barua was born to Krishna Kanta Barua and Korneshwari Barua on 22nd December, 1924 in the village of Barangabari of Gohpur sub-division of Sonitpur district in Assam. Born to a farming family, Barua’s struggles started at a very young age. Her mother died when she was only five years old. Her father passed away a few years later. By the time Barua was 13, she was orphaned and dropped out of school to raise her siblings.
On 20th September, 1942 Kanaklata Barua joined a group of freedom fighters and marched towards Assam’s Gohpur Police station to hoist the Tricolour in support of the Quit India Movement. Police opened fire indiscriminately on the group to prevent them. 17-year-old Kanaklata Barua was martyred with the Tricolour in her hands.
Being refused by Subhash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj for being a minor, Kanaklata joined Mrityu Bahini – a death squad or suicide squad founded by Gandhian Pushpalata Das to encourage local women of undivided Darrang district to participate in India’s freedom struggle. At 17, Kanaklata was the only minor in the squad which only consisted of adults.
Their sacrifice, however, did not go in vain. The tricolour was hoisted at the police station that day, adding more fuel to the movement. Although an unheard-of name in the history books, Barua with her supreme sacrifice became a symbol of womanhood and patriotism in Assamese history. Her story of grit and gallantry has a legendary status in Assam — from schools being named after her to a life-size statue that adorns a park in the state.
To give tribute to her outstanding sacrifice, the Government of India commissioned a coast guard ship in her name in 2020. Indian Coast Guard’s ship — ICGS Kanaklata Barua was named after the teenage freedom fighter. The ship, a fifth in a series of fast patrol vessels (FPV), is suitable for patrolling, maritime surveillance, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching operations, fishery protection, as well as rescue and search missions.

Parbati Giri – Odisha (1926-1995)

Referred to as “The Mother Teresa of Western Odisha”, Parbati Giri was born to Dhananjay and Srimati Giri on January 19, 1926 at Samlaipadar village in Bargarh district. From her childhood days, Parbati had made up her mind to dedicate herself to the service of the nation. Inspired by her uncle Ramachandra Giri, one of the leading Congressmen of the area, Parbati dropped her education at an early age of 11 to join the organisational work of the Congress.
At the age of 12 she left her home and successfully made her way to ‘Bari Ashram’ near Jajpur which was the hotspot for the training of freedom fighters during the salt satyagraha. After being trained as Satyagrahi in the Ashram for two years, where she learned the Gandhian principles of Ahimsha and self-reliance, Parbati returned to her village and propagated Gandhi’s Swaraj message from village to village, encouraging local residents to step up against against the British rule. She gave training to many people for weaving and thread making in villages nearby Sambhalpur town.
In 1940 she began to mobilise people in her village to participate in Khadi Movement and convinced them to practice charkha and wear khadi. In 1942, she joined the Quit India Movement at the age of 16. With the tri-color flag in her hand, she joined the rallies shouting anti-British slogans.
After India’s independence, Parbati Giri devoted her life to uplift the marginalised people. She moved from village to village in the time of natural calamity to help the poor and the destitute. Because of her selfless service to the people she earned the epithet “Mother Teresa of Western Odisha”. She was also called “Banhi Kanya” or Firewoman for her resilience and aggressive nationalistic sentiment and free expression. She passed away on August 17, 1995.
