‘SECL Ke Sushrut’ Becomes First Coal PSU CSR Project on Govt’s DBT Portal

‘SECL Ke Sushrut’ has become the first CSR project of any coal PSU to be listed on the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) portal of the Government of India. This is a CSR programme of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) which is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL).
“With its inclusion in the DBT portal, ‘SECL Ke Sushrut’ is set to ensure greater efficiency, transparency, and accessibility, allowing eligible students to avail themselves of coaching support with ease. This development aligns with SECL’s ongoing efforts to enhance its social impact while reinforcing its commitment to the educational aspirations of youth in and around its operational areas,” reads an announcement by the Ministry of Coal.

What is Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) portal

The DBT initiative, launched by the Government of India, aims to reform the delivery of benefits and subsidies by directly transferring funds to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, minimizing leakages, and ensuring effective utilization of resources. At present, the DBT portal features approximately 325 schemes from 55 ministries, covering diverse sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and social welfare.

What is SECL Ke Sushrut

Started in 2023, ‘SECL Ke Sushrut’ is a flagship educational initiative under SECL’s CSR programmes, designed to provide free medical coaching to 40 students preparing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). The scheme aims to support meritorious and underprivileged students from the coal belt regions of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, equipping them with the necessary resources and guidance to pursue careers in the medical field.

In the first batch of the programme, 39 out of 40 students successfully qualified for NEET 2024. Among them, 11 students secured admission in MBBS course, 2 gained admission in BDS, 2 were admitted to BAMS, 2 got admission in BPTH and 2 were selected for Veterinary courses in Government Colleges across Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL)

SECL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Coal India Limited. It is one of the largest government-owned coal producers in the world. SECL is one of the highest coal producing companies of India. The coal mines of SECL are spread across the central Indian states of Chhatisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, hence the company’s CSR activities focus on the underprivileged people residing in these states.
SECL operates 67 coal mines, of which 41 coal mines lies in Chhatisgarh, while the rest are situated in Madhya Pradesh. Among these 67 coal mines, 46 mines are worked by underground method of mining while the rest are opencast mines. For effective administrative control and operation, the coal mines at SECL have been divided into three groups viz Central India coalfields (CIC), Korba coalfields and Mand Raigarh Coalfields.

SECL’s CSR Spending in FY 2023-24

Chhattisgarh-based Coal India subsidiary SECL has spent more than Rs 300 crores via CSR on various sectors in the state of Chhattisgarh between 2018-19 and 2023-24. The company has undertaken CSR initiatives in a wide range of areas to create greater impact in the lives of people. In the past 5 years, the company has utilised its CSR funds mostly focusing on environmental sustainability, education, healthcare, rural development projects, sanitation and providing support to flagship government programs like Swachh Vidyalaya Abhiyan, Swachh Bharat Mission and Clean Ganga Mission among others.

‘Valley Of Peace’ Iraq- घर हो या बाहर, कहीं भी निकल जाइए, चारों ओर आपको सिर्फ शोर सुनाई देगा। लोगों का शोर, गाड़ी-मोटरों का शोर, हर तरफ़ बस शोर ही शोर! कुछ घाटियां हैं, जहां आपको शांत‍ि और सुकून का अनुभव होगा। लेकिन धरती पर एक जगह ऐसी भी है, जिसे ‘Valley of Peace’ कहा जाता है। लोग इसे ‘दुनिया की सबसे शांत जगह’ के नाम से जानते हैं। यहां सुल्‍तानों से लेकर भ‍िखारी तक ज़मीन के नीचे दफ़न हैं। दुनियाभर से मुसलमान इस जगह को देखने के ल‍िए जाते हैं। इस जगह को काफी पव‍ित्र भी माना जाता है। एक और द‍िलचस्‍प बात, धरती पर बहुत कम ही कब्र‍िस्‍तान ऐसे हैं, जहां क‍हीं का भी मुसलमान हो, उसे दफन क‍िया जाता है।

दुनिया की सबसे शांत जगह ‘Valley Of Peace’

शांत‍ि की घाटी (Valley of Peace) से अगर आप ये समझ रहे होंगे क‍ि शायद यह कोई पहाड़ी होगी, तो आप पूरी तरह ग़लत हैं। दरअसल, Iraq के Nazaf शहर में बसा एक कब्र‍िस्‍तान है, जिसे दुनिया के सबसे बड़े कब्रिस्तानों में से एक माना जाता है। Iraq में इसे वादी अल-सलाम ‘Vaadi-AL-Salaam’ के नाम से जाना जाता है। इसे देखने के ल‍िए दुन‍ियाभर से मुस्‍ल‍िम Iraq आते हैं।
‘Valley Of Peace’ में 60 लाख से ज्‍यादा मुसलमानों के शव दफन हैं। इनमें कई सुल्‍तान, साइंटिस्‍ट, नेता और यहां तक क‍ि भ‍िखारी भी शामिल हैं। Valley Of Peace में ईश्वर के पैगंबर ‘Saaleh’ और ‘Hood’ की कब्रें भी हैं, तो राजकुमार ‘Ali Ibn Abi Taalib’ के अवशेष भी यहीं दफन हैं। आप जानकर हैरान होंगे क‍ि यह कब्रिस्तान 1,485.5 एकड़ में फैला हुआ है, जो कुल मिलाकर 1700 से अधिक फुटबॉल मैदानों के बराबर है।वादी अल-सलाम ‘Valley Of Peace’ कब्रिस्तान को Nazaf शहर की आत्मा माना जाता है। आप अगर इसे देखेंगे तो कब्र‍िस्‍तान की जगह इसे एक शहर समझ बैठेंगे, क्‍योंक‍ि यहां पर कब्रें तंग इमारतों की तरह दिखती हैं। दुनिया के विभिन्न हिस्सों से मुसलमान यहां घूमने के ल‍िए आते हैं। वादी अल-सलाम ‘Valley Of Peace’ दुनिया का एकमात्र ऐसा कब्रिस्तान है जहां 1400 साल से भी अधिक समय से शवों को दफनाने की प्रक्रिया आज भी जारी है। अल-हिरा के राजाओं और अल-सस्सानी युग के नेताओं को भी यहां दफनाया गया था। इसी कब्र‍िस्‍तान में उनके साथियों, राजाओं, सुल्तानों, हमदानिया राज्य के राजकुमारों, फातिमिया, अल-बुवेहिया, सफ़ावेइया, काजर को भी दफन किया गया था। हर पर‍िवार के ल‍िए यहां विशेष कमरा आवंटित किया गया है। कमरे भूमिगत बने हुए हैं और नीचे उतरने का रास्ता सीढ़ी से जाता है।
‘Guiness Book Of World Records’ ने इसे सबसे बड़े कब्रिस्तान के रूप में मान्‍यता दी है। ‘Unesco Sites Of World Heritage’ ने इसे विश्व धरोहर स्‍थलों की सूची में रखा है। इराक युद्ध के दौरान प्रतिदिन लगभग 200-250 लाशें यहां दफनाई जाती थीं, लेकिन 2010 में यह संख्या घटकर 100 से भी कम हो गई थी। दुनिया भर से हर साल लगभग 50,000 नए शवों को इस कब्रिस्तान में दफनाया जाता है।

यहां आने वाले लोग मांगते हैं मुराद

इस कब्रिस्तान में एक मकबरा भी है। इस मकबरे पर घूमने आने वाले दुनियाभर के शिया मुस्लिम मन्नत मांगते हैं कि उन्हें इसी कब्रिस्तान में दफनाया जाए। 14वीं सदी में निर्मित इस कब्रिस्तान का आकार दिन प्रतिदिन बढ़ता जा रहा है। कारण है इराक के आसपास के इलाकों के लोग आतंकी संगठन आईएसआईएस (ISIS) से लड़ने के बाद शहीद होने के बाद दफ़न होने यहां आते हैं। अधिकांश इराकी और कई ईरानी शियाओं के रिश्तेदार भी यहां दफन हैं। 2014 में एक वक्‍त ऐसा भी आया था, जब कहा गया क‍ि यहां अब शव रखने की जगह नहीं है, भूखंड खत्‍म हो गए हैं। इसके बाद कब्र‍िस्‍तान से कई शव चोरी हो गए, और कुछ शवों को बेच दिया गया।
Al Jazeera की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, दुनिया भर के शिया मुसलमानों के लिए ‘Valley Of Peace’ अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण स्थल है। यहां कब्र खोदने में 100 डॉलर और दफनाने में 170 से 200 डॉलर का खर्च आता है। 2021 में आई एक रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, वादी अल-सलाम में शवों को दफनाने का काम दोगुनी तेजी से होने लगा है।

Residents and Environmentalists Opposes Construction in Protected Ridge Area in South Delhi

Environmentalists and local residents in South Delhi have come together to oppose the construction of a private housing project in the Morphological Ridge area. The project stands apart for being the first such scheme in an ecologically sensitive zone and still being granted environmental clearances by the central government. The plot of land on which the construction is going to start soon is also disputed amongst government bodies. While the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have cited the land as ‘residential’, the Forest Department maintains it is part of the morphological ridge.

‘Delhi Ridge’

This morphological ridge is an extension of the geological formation called the ‘Delhi Ridge’, which is the northern extension of the Aravalli ranges. The ridge holds ecological significance, even though the final notification of the ridge is pending under section 20 of the Indian Forest Act of 1927. The ridge is protected as a reserved forest through a May 1994 notification.
Built by RR Texknit, the project is planned in an area of 25,650 sqm. Records show that the company obtained NOC from the fire services, the Delhi Urban Art Commission, the Airport Authority of India, the Delhi Jal Board and the MCD within just three months of acquiring the land in April 2024.

Eknath Shinde Breaks Silence on Kamra’s Joke, Accuses Comedian of Having an Agenda

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of Maharashtra responded to the joke controversy that comedian Kunal Kamra made against him. Controversy erupted when Kamra delivered bold satirical statements targeting Shinde through his stand-up show performances. The comedian reinterpreted the song from Dil Toh Pagal Hai to insert derogatory humor about Shinde, using the word “gaddar” (traitor). The show video circulated rapidly on the internet causing Shiv Sena supporters to launch a backlash.
Shinde made his first public remarks about the issue by stating that freedom of speech exists but has set restrictions. “We understand satire, but there should be a limit,” Shinde remarked, distancing himself from the vandalism that followed Kamra’s performance. Shinde clarified that he did not endorse the violent actions of Shiv Sena workers, who stormed the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai and damaged equipment in protest. “Every action has a reaction,” he explained, underscoring the emotional reaction of his party members but stating he did not support such acts.

Kamra Refuses to Apologise

Kamra, however, stood by his comments and refused to apologise. He pointed out that his joke was similar to remarks made by other political figures, including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, about Shinde. “I will not apologise. What I said is exactly what Mr. Ajit Pawar said about Mr. Eknath Shinde. I don’t fear this mob & I will not be hiding under my bed,” Kamra declared, emphasising his right to freedom of expression.
In the aftermath of the joke, Shiv Sena workers not only vandalised the comedy venue but the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also demolished parts of the building, citing code violations. The incident has sparked a larger debate about the boundaries of free speech and the consequences of offending political figures. Kamra responded by condemning the attack, likening it to senseless actions. “Attacking a venue for a comedian’s words is as senseless as overturning a lorry carrying tomatoes because you didn’t like the butter chicken you were served,” he quipped.

Shinde Accuses Kamra of Agenda-Driven Comments

Shinde responded to these events by focusing on Kamra’s history of controversial comments. He accused the comedian of being motivated by external interests, stating, “This same person has previously spoken against the Chief Justice, the Prime Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, and leading industrialists of this nation. This is not freedom of expression. It is speaking on behalf of someone with an agenda.”
Despite the uproar, Shinde made it clear that his priority was his work and public service. “I focus on work and delivering justice to the people,” he stated, reiterating his disapproval of the violence while stressing his focus on governance.

Air Quality Commission Evokes Stage One GRAP Restrictions As Delhi’s Air Quality Dips to ‘Poor’ Category

As the Delhi air quality index (AQI) plunged into the ‘poor’ category on Monday, the Commission for Air-Quality Management in NCR and adjoining areas (CAQM) will again evoke stage one of the graded response action plan (GRAP). Delhi’s air quality remained under the ‘moderate’ category for eight days until Monday, during which restrictions were dropped.
“AQI of Delhi has shown the trend due to variable surface wind and unfavourable meteorological conditions in Delhi NCR,” said the order released on Monday by the commission for air-quality management. Other than surface winds, clear skies have also influenced the meteorological conditions in the city. The maximum temperature on Monday (36°C) was around 5° above normal, as per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). 

AQI So Far

The average AQI for Sunday was 194, which saw an increase to 206 on Monday. The capital city so far has reported four ‘poor’ (201-300) air days, 19 ‘moderate’ (101-200) air days and only two ‘satisfactory’ (51-100) air days.
The city is expected to see clear skies again by Wednesday, after which strong surface winds are forecast by the meteorological office. This is expected to lower the temperature by a degree or two.

Uttarakhand Court Hears 3 PILs Against Waterbodies Encroachment in Doon Valley

The Uttarakhand High Court came down heavily on the state government for not complying with its order regarding the encroachment of waterbodies in Dehradun. As a response, the court issued fresh guidelines for actions against encroachment on Monday. The court heard 3 PILs that flagged encroachment on water bodies and rivulets in Rajpur, Doon Valley. 

What Petitioners Say

A petitioner sought from the High Court that the state declare the catchment areas of drains of Rispana and Bindal rivers as a ‘no construction zone’. Recently, environmentalists and local residents have strongly opposed the Rispara and Bindal River elevated Road Project, warning that it can dry up the river bodies. The construction project involves constructing two elevated roads to ease traffic congestion in Dehradun. A combined length of approximately 26 km is to be laid down at an estimated cost of over Rs.6000 crore. This project can prove to be detrimental to the life of the rivers.
While another petitioner flagged private encroachment on regulated and seasonal streams in Sahastradhara. 
The court also questioned the municipal Commissioner of Dehradun on the delay in submitting a compliance report regarding encroachment on water bodies, mandated by the court in one of its earlier orders. Addressing the municipal commissioner, the Chief Justice said, “Are you to be reminded that you need to be complying with the orders of the court? Do you realise the consequences?”

AI to Join India’s Fight Against TB, Says Experts

In the India Innovation Summit that concluded last week, top medical experts from various parts of the country chose the top five innovations out of 228 advanced-level ideas from across the globe. Innovations were scored on the basis of their readiness for human use, cost-effectiveness and scope of implementation in India, particularly within the country’s national TB elimination program. Now the use of AI, in the form of quick strip tests and drone detection of patients in remote areas, will also join the fight against TB.

National TB Elimination Program

Inaugurated by the union minister of state for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patil, the summit sought to pioneer solutions to end TB. The event, held at Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre, was organised by the joint effort of the Department of Health Research of the Indian Council of Medical Research (DHR-ICMR) and the Central TB division (CTB) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
Highlighting India’s ambitious plan to eliminate TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target, Anupriya Patil stated, “The program is steadily progressing towards the goal of eliminating TB by 2025. The number of missing cases has been reduced from 15 lakh in 2015 to 2.5 lakh in 2023. The program was able to notify 25.5 lakh and 26 lakh TB cases in 2023 and 2024, the highest ever.”

 People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) India ने हाल ही में ताज पैलेस में बीटल्स थीम के साथ अपना Silver Jubilee Year याने 25वीं सालगिरह Celebrate की, जहां The Diplomat Star और PETA इंडिया के पहले स्टार समर्थक, John Abraham मुख्य अतिथि थे। जानवरों के लिए उनके अथक प्रयासों के सम्मान में PETA India ने पूजा भट्ट और अनीता डोंगरे सहित उपस्थित लोगों के सामने  John Abraham को PETA India का पहला मानक निदेशक, यानि Honorary Director नामित किया। PETA India की निदेशक पूर्वा जोशीपुरा ने John को ये सम्मान प्रदान किया, और दुनिया भर में PETA संस्थाओं की संस्थापक ‘Ingrid Newkirk’ ने एक शानदार और जोशीला भाषण दिया।

 John जानवरों के लिए द्वारा किए गए कई बेहतरीन कार्यों में  ई-रिटेलर kwicker से  अपने प्लेटफॉर्म पर जीवित जानवरों के व्यापार की अनुमति न देने का सफलतापूर्वक आग्रह करना,  सरकार से सर्कस में जानवरों के करतबों पर प्रतिबंध लगाने का अनुरोध करना,  चोरी-छुपे अवैध रूप से मारे गए  सूअरों के लिए आवाज़ उठाना , नेपाली सरकार से ‘Chitvan Mahotsav’ के अपमानजनक हाथी “खेल” को समाप्त करने की अपील करना, पर्यटकों की सवारी के लिए इस्तेमाल किए जाने वाले हाथियों की पीड़ा पर ध्यान आकर्षित करने वाले अभियान में शामिल होना, और ‘कौन बनेगा करोड़पति’ KBC में अपनी जीत की राशि PETA India कोदान करना शामिल है। John ने बेली नामक एक सामुदायिक कुत्ते को भी गोद लिया है। John को 2020 में PETA India का ‘Person Of The Year’ भी चुना गया था।

John Abraham, PETA India के Honorary Director बनने वाले पहले भारतीय सेलिब्रिटी हैं। वह विदेश में पेटा संस्थाओं के मानद निदेशकों की प्रतिष्ठित और विशिष्ट सूची में शामिल हो गए हैं, जिनमें Pamela Anderson, James Cromwell, Anjelica Huston और अन्य शामिल हैं।

‘PETA India’-जिसका आदर्श वाक्य है, ‘जानवरों पर प्रयोग करना, उन्हें खाना, पहनना, मनोरंजन के लिए इस्तेमाल करना या किसी अन्य तरीके से उनका दुरुपयोग करने का अधिकार हमें नहीं है। PETA India हर साल जानवरों की सुरक्षा और उनके संरक्षण के लिए प्रयास करने वाले Social Influencers या ऐसे लोगों को सम्मानित करता है जिनके प्रयासों का सकारात्मक प्रभाव समाज के लोगों पर पड़ता है। इसी कड़ी में साल 2000 में John Abraham को ‘Person Of The Year’ चुनने के बाद 2021 में आलिया भट्ट (Alia Bhatt) को एनिमल फ्रेंडली फैशन इंडस्ट्री को सपोर्ट करने की वजह से PETA’s 2021 के ‘Person Of The Year’ का सम्मान दिया गया था। आलिया भट्ट ने उस कंपनी ‘Phool’ में अपना पैसा निवेश किया है, जो मंदिर में चढ़ाए गए फूलों से वीगन लेदर (Fleather) तैयार करती है। इसी के साथ आलिया के ब्रैंड ‘Ed-a-Mamma’ ने भी 2021 का PETA इंडिया फैशन अवॉर्ड जीता है, जो बच्चों को जानवरों के प्रति प्यार करना सिखाता है। आलिया ने Pre-Adoption PETA इंडिया कैंपेन में भी काम किया है, जो बिल्लियों और कुत्तों जैसे जानवरों के लिए काम करता है।
Bollywood की ‘दबंग’ अभिनेत्री सोनाक्षी सिन्हा को PETA India के 2022 ‘Person Of The Year’ के खिताब से सम्मानित किया गया। PETA India का मतलब है भारत में जानवरों के साथ नैतिक व्यवहार करने वाले लोग! अंतरराष्ट्रीय पशु अधिकार NGO समूह ने इस खिताब का समर्थन किया और भारत में जानवरों की जान बचाने के लिए ‘दबंग’ अभिनेत्री के कार्यों की सराहना की ।
सोनाक्षी के प्रयासों ने फैशन के लिए मारे जाने वाले कई जानवरों की जान बचाने में मदद की, लेकिन कुत्तों और बिल्लियों के अधिकारों के लिए उनकी मजबूत वकालत ने उन्हें यह खिताब दिलाया। जैसा कि PETA India के चमड़ा विरोधी अभियान में कहा गया है, “हर साल 1.4 करोड़ से अधिक गाय, भेड़, बकरी, कुत्ते, बिल्लियां और अन्य जानवर क्रूरता से मारे जाते हैं, चमड़े के सामानों के लिए, जिनकी किसी को ज़रूरत नहीं है।”
अभिनेत्री दीया मिर्ज़ा पर्यावरण संरक्षण और पशु अधिकारों के लिए अपनी निरंतर वकालत के लिए जानी जाती हैं। साल 2023 में उन्हें अंतरराष्ट्रीय पशु अधिकार संगठन PETA India द्वारा सम्मानित ‘Person Of The Year 2023’ से सम्मानित किया गया। 42 वर्षीय अभिनेत्री, जो संयुक्त राष्ट्र पर्यावरण कार्यक्रम की सद्भावना राजदूत भी हैं, अक्सर पशु अधिकारों को की रक्षा करने वाली नीतियों को बढ़ावा देती हैं, चाहे वह पशु क्रूरता निवारण अधिनियम में संशोधन हो या फैशन के लिए जानवरों की खाल के इस्तेमाल को हतोत्साहित करना हो। उन्होंने कई परियोजनाओं पर PETA के साथ काम भी किया है
‘The Kerala Story’ की उत्कृष्ट अदाकारा अदा शर्मा को 2024 का ‘Person Of The Year’ चुना गया था। अदा शर्मा ने 2024 में पेटा इंडिया के साथ मिलकर Keral के एक मंदिर को एक आदमकद यांत्रिक हाथी भेंट किया है। यह उपहार केरल के उस मंदिर को दिया गया, जिसने धार्मिक समारोहों के लिए कभी भी जीवित हाथियों को रखने या किराए पर न लेने का निर्णय लिया है। अदा शर्मा ने PETA के लिए चमड़े के खिलाफ एक अभियान में भी काम किया, जिसमें वह 1.4 अरब से अधिक गायों, भेड़ों, बकरियों और लाखों अन्य जानवरों की पीड़ा की ओर ध्यान आकर्षित करने के लिए ‘जिंदा खाल उतारती’ नजर आईं, जिन्हें हर साल उनकी खाल के लिए हिंसक रूप से मार दिया जाता है।
