BJP’s Tarun Chugh Criticises Mallikarjun Kharge Over Vande Mataram Controversy

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tarun Chugh, the BJP National General Secretary, has openly criticised Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge regarding his comments on the Vande Mataram controversy. Chugh asserted that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) played a “monumental role” in India’s struggle for independence and in the building of the nation. He articulated that the Congress party’s narrative tends to overlook this contribution, attributing credit predominantly to the Gandhi-Nehru family.

Speaking to ANI, Chugh contended that the Congress party exhibits a narrow vision which undermines the collective efforts of numerous freedom fighters. He suggested that by focusing primarily on a sole family, they neglect the broader narrative of India’s freedom movement. “The RSS has been integral to nation-building and the independence effort, yet Kharge and the Congress acknowledge only a specific lineage,” Chugh claimed.

Kharge’s Defence Amid Controversy

In response to the row, Mallikarjun Kharge stood firm, stating that he sang the same version of Vande Mataram that was performed by iconic leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. His comments come in light of accusations from the BJP after a video surfaced showing Kharge and Sonia Gandhi conversing during the rendition of the national song at Independence Day celebrations on August 15.

Kharge argued that if singing the song in such a manner constitutes wrongdoing, then the legacy of these historical figures should also be called into question. “If participating in the same practice is a crime, the government should proceed with legal action against our revered leaders,” he remarked, emphasising that the Congress had previously established the national songs to be adopted by the country long before the present discussion. His remarks aimed to highlight the continuity of tradition that has been maintained for decades.

Addressing the BJP’s criticism, Kharge asserted that they are unaware of the Congress party’s long-standing resolutions on national songs. He underscored that national standards should not be subject to changing political rhetoric, cautioning against arbitrary definitions that future governments might impose.

Political Tensions and Allegations

The exchange between the BJP and the Congress escalated, with Kharge accusing the BJP and RSS of undermining the contributions made during India’s freedom movement. He labelled their repeated references to the Gandhi family as misplaced and suggested that such tactics reflect an “anti-India” sentiment both towards the nation and its diverse religions.

Kharge further highlighted the stark contrast in political experience between himself and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, asserting that he has been serving in the legislative assembly even prior to Shah’s birth. This serves as part of his broader attempt to establish credibility and counter the BJP’s narrative on leadership and legacy.

As tensions rise over the national song and its significance, both parties appear entrenched in their respective positions. The controversy underscores ongoing political rivalries and differing interpretations of India’s historical narrative as each side seeks to affirm its influence and legitimacy in the public discourse.
