BJP Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla’s Mother Injured in Pune Hit-and-Run Incident

The CSR Journal Magazine

Yasmeen Poonawalla, the mother of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, sustained serious injuries after being hit by a car in Pune on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred while she was standing by the roadside near a petrol pump along with her driver and support staff.

According to Shehzad Poonawalla, his mother was struck from behind when a speeding vehicle rammed into her. She received multiple injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Doctors have advised that she undergo surgery.

Incident Recorded in CCTV Footage

The collision was captured on at least three CCTV cameras in the vicinity, which reportedly show the vehicle hitting Yasmeen Poonawalla and fleeing the scene without stopping. The footage is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

Following the incident, Shehzad Poonawalla took to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to provide an update on his mother’s condition and to urge the Pune City Police and Maharashtra government to take prompt action in apprehending the driver responsible.

CM Devendra Fadnavis Assures Swift Action

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke to Shehzad Poonawalla over the phone after learning of the incident. Fadnavis later posted on X, describing the event as “unfortunate” and confirmed that senior-level police teams have been deployed to trace and arrest the accused.

Authorities are currently working with available surveillance video and eyewitness accounts to identify the vehicle and its driver. Efforts are underway to expedite the investigation.

Related Developments in Pune Traffic Incidents

The hit-and-run incident comes amid heightened attention on road safety and traffic violations in Pune, following several recent cases under public and judicial scrutiny. In a separate case, the Supreme Court recently granted bail to three individuals—Aditya Sood, Ashish Mittal, and Amar Gaikwad—accused in the widely discussed Pune Porsche hit-and-run incident. The trio had faced allegations of tampering with blood samples and shielding a minor involved in the fatal accident. The families of the victims in that case have since expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision.

The Pune Police continue to investigate both matters as public concern grows over the increasing number of hit-and-run cases and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
