Bihar: “Locked Gate, Assaulted Me”: Woman Groped, Dragged On Street By Mob In Bihar

The CSR Journal Magazine

A troubling incident in Bihar has drawn widespread condemnation after a young woman reported that she was assaulted and nearly raped in public. The event occurred in the Nalanda district under the jurisdiction of the Noorsarai police station on March 26, during the evening hours. The 20-year-old victim stated that while she was walking home from a market, three men from her village confronted her.

According to her complaint, the assailants forcibly pulled her onto the road, groped her, and attempted to sexually assault her. Despite her efforts to defend herself, they tore her clothing, leaving her partially exposed. Although she cried out for assistance, individuals nearby failed to intervene, and it was only after her screams attracted attention that the assailants fled the scene.

Video Evidence Surfaces

Disturbingly, the alleged assailants recorded the assault on video. A clip of approximately 40 seconds later emerged on social media platforms, intensifying public scrutiny of the incident. Eyewitness accounts indicate that some bystanders chose to film rather than assist the victim, adding to the outrage felt by many regarding the situation.

Police Action and Arrests

The survivor lodged a formal complaint the following day on March 27, leading law enforcement to register a case and initiate an investigation. Two of the individuals named in the complaint, identified as Ashok Yadav and Matru Mahato (alias Navneet Kumar), have been apprehended and are currently in judicial custody. Authorities are actively searching for a third suspect, Ravikant Kumar. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Agrawal confirmed that two suspects have been detained and that raids are ongoing to locate the remaining accused.

Official Communications and Investigation Progress

The Nalanda Police released a statement outlining the details of the case, confirming that a report was filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The police noted that the investigation is progressing, with actions being taken to ensure that the remaining suspect is captured. They emphasized their commitment to addressing the serious nature of the allegations made by the victim.

Formation of Special Investigation Team

In light of the gravity of this incident, a Special Investigation Team has been established to conduct further inquiries into the matter. Authorities have indicated that stringent measures will be implemented as the investigation continues. This incident has highlighted pressing concerns regarding the safety of women, especially in rural regions, as well as the role of onlookers who opted to record rather than intervene in the assault.

Community Reaction and Governance Questions

This case, originating from the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, has sparked critical conversations about law enforcement and governance within the state. The incident has elicited significant public demand for improved measures to protect women and ensure accountability among bystanders in future emergencies.
