Big Voter Shake-Up in Puducherry! Final Electoral Roll Out, Numbers Drop to 9.44 Lakh

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Puducherry has officially released the final Electoral Roll for the Union Territory, following a detailed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) conducted from October 27, 2025, to February 14, 2026. The revision utilized January 1, 2026, as the qualifying date to ensure that the voter list is accurate and trustworthy.

The CEO’s office noted that this process involved a complete physical verification of the electorate, carried out by Booth Level Officers (BLOs), who personally distributed and collected enumeration forms. This initiative successfully identified and eliminated a considerable number of ineligible voters, such as those who had passed away, relocated to other states, or had duplicate entries.

Changes in Electorate Numbers

The finalized electoral roll indicates that the total number of registered voters is now 944,211, a decrease from 1,021,578 in the draft roll published on December 16, 2025. During the revision process, 103,467 ineligible voters were removed, while 42,719 eligible voters were added. Following the Claims and Objections phase, an additional 16,619 ineligible voters were deleted from the list.

The final roll features 23,033 electors aged 18-19, 12,204 Persons with Disabilities (PwD), and 6,034 elderly electors aged 85 and over. According to the CEO’s office, the revised roll aims to present a cleaner and more accurate voter list, which is essential for the upcoming elections.

Public Accessibility of the Electoral Roll

To facilitate access for the public, the Final Electoral Roll will be displayed at all polling stations on February 14 and 15, 2026. Voters can also view the list at Voter Facilitation Centres that are managed by Electoral Registration Officers for a duration of seven days, excluding holidays.

First-time electors, especially those aged 18 to 19, as well as existing electors who have moved to Puducherry, will be provided with their Electoral Photo Identity Cards (EPICs) by BLOs at their respective residences. Voters who turned 18 by January 1, 2026, but have not yet applied for inclusion in the electoral roll may do so online or through BLOs during the current update phase.

Voter Engagement and Education Initiatives

Electors are encouraged to confirm their names on the Electoral Roll and to submit applications for inclusion, correction, or deletion, either through online platforms or offline channels. For any inquiries related to the electoral process, the public can reach out to the toll-free number 1950. In an effort to tackle misinformation during the election period, the Election Department has initiated the Meiporul program, inspired by Tirukural Couplet 423. This initiative promotes the message to “Pause, Verify, and Share” information pertaining to elections to counteract the spread of false narratives.

Upcoming Assembly Elections

This year, the Union Territory will conduct elections for all 30 constituencies in the 16th Puducherry Legislative Assembly. The Congress party is contesting the elections in alliance with the DMK and CPI, while the opposition comprises the All India NR Congress, BJP, and AIADMK. In the previous election held in 2021, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) achieved a simple majority, and N Rangaswamy from the All India NR Congress was sworn in as Chief Minister for the fourth time at that time.
